Cyprus Police 19 March 2025
The Police are once again advising the public to be careful, following a new complaint filed with the Police, regarding fraud committed by persons falsely posing as doctors. Specifically, the perpetrators of the fraud communicate with citizens by telephone and, impersonating doctors, falsely state that a relative of the citizens who answer the phone call has been injured and needs immediate surgery and other medical treatment. The perpetrators ask the citizens to immediately pay large sums of money for medical expenses. The perpetrators call from a hidden number and usually ask the citizens not to interrupt the phone call, as a result of which the citizens are unable to communicate with their relative or with the Police. The Police recommend special caution, emphasizing that such telephone communications and claims are false and aim to deceive citizens and steal large sums of money. The public is urged to immediately inform the Police, in case they receive similar type of phone calls, by contacting the nearest Police Station or the District Police Stations, or the Citizens' Hotline, on telephone number 1460. According to the new complaint submitted to the Police on Wednesday, March 19, fraudsters extorted from a person in Limassol, an amount of money exceeding €5,000, as well as jewellery.
