Two crucial and decisive years at the helm of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works. Two years where we faced crises and pitfalls, but we are moving forward with determination. Along the way, we achieved significant progress in projects that remained pending, laying the foundations for a modern and functional Cyprus.
We resolved the differences with the airport management company, after a very difficult negotiation, and we are proceeding with the second phase of airport expansion, a project that was abandoned by the previous government and would have taken 10 years to complete. Today, the project is progressing dynamically and is expected to be completed in 3 years. With investments of €170 million. solutions are provided by 2036. Now, we are called upon to meet the challenge of successful implementation, with the aim of delivering modern and functional airports that will meet the needs of the future and strengthen Cyprus' position as an interconnection hub.
In Larnaka, we are putting the expansion of the port and marina back on track, since we were forced to manage a difficult and problematic contract, always demonstrating legality. The gaps in the contract made its management particularly complex, creating significant challenges. A comprehensive assessment of the investment should have been carried out beforehand to ensure the viability and smooth implementation of the project. Despite the difficulties, we are proceeding methodically, laying the right foundations for the development of a modern port and tourism infrastructure for Larnaka.
We are working on connecting Paphos – Polis Chrysochous with a 4-lane motorway. The difficulty we faced was that the contractor was not proceeding with the implementation of the project. The challenge we have now is to put the project back on track, overcoming obstacles and ensuring its smooth execution. We are leveraging the data and knowledge we have, and we are moving forward with the construction of a 4-lane highway, which will significantly enhance connectivity and contribute to the development of the region.
We took on the serious problem of recalls, which had remained indifferent for 15 years, without anyone managing it in the previous period. The difficulty we face is the problems that have arisen due to the large number of cars affected. Although the process is demanding, we are determined to find solutions and ensure the safety of citizens, implementing the required measures responsibly and consistently.
With consistency and dedication, we will continue to offer solutions that will improve the lives of our citizens and contribute to the development of the country, always moving forward, with vision and goals for the future.
EVALUATION OF THE MINISTER OF TRANSPORT
From Takata, to traffic and infrastructure issues
By Angelos Nicolaou
Alexis Vafeadis completes two years at the helm of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works and criticism of his work includes both positive and negative elements. Although he has shown hard work and determination, his lack of experience and the need to immediately manage many difficult everyday problems have created significant challenges.
One of the most critical issues that Mr. Vafeadis has had to deal with is the case of the Takata airbags. Mr. Vafeadis took responsibility for resolving this complex issue, which concerns the recall of 82,000 vehicles with defective airbags. Although it has made a significant effort through legislative measures and other tools, progress in completing the recall, with the aim of avoiding new victims, appears not to be as expected.
In addition, the suspension of project contracts for the integrated development of the port and marina in Larnaka, as well as for the Polis-Pafos road, highlighted the need for more determination and efficiency in the effort to implement large infrastructure projects. This development caused delays and paved the way for criticism, while the reversal of agreements, although necessary, brought ambiguities about the future of these projects. In the area of implementing new projects, progress has been made in the construction of infrastructure projects, aimed at improving living conditions and enhancing development. However, the effectiveness of these projects depends on speed and consistency in their completion, with some delays affecting their success.
Finally, the traffic problem remains a serious challenge, and despite the Government's intention to invest hundreds of millions in infrastructure projects, the efficiency and immediate implementation of these projects are in doubt.
Overall, Alexis Vafeadis has made a significant effort, but the challenges he faces, combined with the need for more determination and speed in implementing critical projects, highlight that his tenure requires further improvement in some areas.
