The Federation of Entrepreneurs and Professional Women of Cyprus (BPW Cyprus) expresses its strong concern about the new increase in the gender pay gap in Cyprus, as recorded in official Eurostat data.
Specifically, according to the most recent data, the pay gap between men and women amounted to 12.2%, an increase compared to 11.9% the previous year. This practically means that for every euro a man earns, a woman receives an average of just 88 cents, despite the equivalent value of the work. This inequality affects not only women's current income, but also their long-term prospects – from savings to retirement benefits.
The pay gap reflects deeper structural inequalities, such as the under-representation of women in positions of responsibility, the lack of recognition of unpaid care work, and stereotypes that continue to influence women's career choices and opportunities.
BPW Cyprus calls on the State, employers and social partners to take targeted and substantial measures to reduce the pay gap, promoting equality in the workplace through transparency policies, enhancing the presence of women in leadership positions and supporting work and family balance.
As in previous years, BPW Cyprus is implementing a nationwide awareness campaign, aiming to highlight women's right to equal pay in work of equal value and to exert pressure for the effective implementation of the legislation, through intensive controls and the imposition of sanctions on employers who violate it.
This year's campaign builds on a dynamic TV and online campaign, while BPW Cyprus reaffirms its commitment to continue the fight until the gender pay gap is finally eliminated. The creation of an equal and fair working environment for all is a fundamental principle and a timeless mission of the Federation
