695 VOTERS OVER THE AGE OF 100 ALMOST REMOVED FROM THE ELECTORAL ROLL

 Filenews 13 March 2025

A total of 695 citizens of the Republic of Cyprus appear in the electoral rolls to be over 100 years old. The petition belongs to the head of the Election Service, Mr. Menelaos Vassiliou, who was speaking before the House Standing Committee on Internal Affairs.

The issue was raised at a previous meeting of the Commission, when a proposal was made to remove people over the age of 100 from the electoral roll on the grounds that they would obviously have already emigrated to the Lord.

However, some of the interested parties or their relatives reacted, so the Election Service was asked to inform Parliament how many people were affected.

The President of the Committee, Aristos Damianou, said that in the time since the previous meeting of the Committee, he was informed about five cases of citizens whose age is over 100 years old. MP Alexandra Attalidou also made reference to a citizen aged 105.

The Electoral Service is looking into the matter in order to find a way to remove from the lists those who are really not alive, so that not everyone is automatically deleted, as originally thought, which would also lead to the deletion of living people.

Meanwhile, disappeared from the room of the Parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs, before which the amendment of the Constitution so that the 17-year-olds could vote was being discussed, were the MPs of DIKO, EDEK and ELAM.

The chairman of the House Standing Committee on Internal Affairs Aristos Damianou wondered where the MPs of the parties are and added that it is also a matter of respecting the procedures.

Those political forces that did not take a position on the issue of amending the Constitution on this issue must do so so that the Commission also knows how to move, Damianou said.
