YELLOW WARNING FOR THUNDERSTORMS, HAIL AND STRONG WINDS

A yellow warning for severe thunderstorms has been issued by the Department of Meteorology.

Isolated severe storms are expected to affect the island intermittently.

Locally, the intensity of rain is expected to exceed 35 millimeters per hour. Hail is expected to fall in a thunderstorm, while winds will change and strengthen.

The warning will be in effect from 11am today until 6pm.

Detailed prognosis

Weak low pressure affects the area. On Thursday, cold air mass is expected to affect the region.

Today the weather will be partly cloudy and later at times mostly cloudy and localized showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected, initially from the southwest and gradually in the rest of the areas. The winds will blow initially variable weak, 3 Beaufort, to gradually become mainly southeast to southwest weak to moderate and locally moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be a little turbulent. The temperature will rise around 18 degrees in the interior and coasts and around 7 degrees in the higher mountains.

Tonight the weather will initially be partly cloudy with the possibility of isolated rain or thunderstorms, but will soon become mostly clear. The winds will blow mainly northwest to northeast weak, 3 Beaufort, and the sea will be calm to a little turbulent. The temperature will drop to around 4 degrees in the interior, around 9 degrees on the coast and 1 degree in the higher mountains, where frost is likely to form locally.

On Tuesday the weather will be mostly cloudy at times and isolated showers or thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon, mainly in the western half of the island. On Wednesday the weather will be partly cloudy and isolated showers are expected at times and a thunderstorm in the afternoon in the eastern half of the island. Isolated showers and snow or sleet are initially likely on Thursday in the higher mountains, while the weather will soon become partly cloudy and cold.

The temperature will fluctuate at the same levels on Tuesday and Wednesday, which are close to average climatic values. On Thursday it is expected to drop noticeably.

The height of snow, at the time of issue of the bulletin, was 2 cm in Troodos Square and 10 cm in Chionistra.
