The research team of the ERATOSTENIS Center of Excellence conducted a
field mission to the Mavrokolympos Dam in the Paphos district. The aim was to assess the impact of the rapid discharge of the reservoir due to a failure.
The measurements collected are expected to reveal important information about the
actual level of the dam bottom. In addition, erosion phenomena caused by the rapid discharge will be examined, around the dam and at the outlet to the sea. These data are invaluable for understanding the
environmental impacts of the sudden discharge of water and for formulating protection and restoration strategies.
The rapid depletion of reservoirs deserves to be investigated for phenomena such as accelerated erosion, sediment loss and disruption of the hydrological balance of the area. Data analysis will allow scientists to assess both the immediate and long-term consequences, proposing effective water resources management strategies.
Systematic monitoring is also being carried out using Copernicus Sentinel satellite data and high-resolution PLANET images. The results and mapping data will be delivered to the District Water Development Department in Paphos.
The efforts of the ERATOSTENES Center of Excellence are essential for understanding the changes in Cyprus' water systems and addressing risks from natural phenomena.
Through its continuous research activity, it strengthens environmental protection and contributes to the sustainable development of our society. It confirms its social and scientific role in Cyprus, the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean, pioneering the monitoring, research and management of natural resources through Space and Remote Sensing technologies.
