ROAD TAX - RENEWAL OF 464,064 REGISTRATIONS - DEADLINE EXPIRES 11 MARCH

 Filenews 27 February 2025

As of February 26, 464,064 registrations had been renewed, according to the Department of Road Transport (TUM) of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works. The deadline for renewing marketing authorisations without a fine is midnight on Tuesday 11 March 2025.

According to TFT data, the renewal of marketing authorisations in 2025 is on the rise, as by the same date in 2024 436,923 authorisations had been renewed, recording an increase of 6.2%.

Procedure and conditions for renewal

Marketing authorisations may be renewed for a period of three, six, nine or twelve months. However, to complete the process, the vehicle must have a valid certificate of suitability and insurance.

The TFT invites vehicle owners to update their contact details in the Department's register to receive updates about their vehicles, such as recall notifications.

The TFT electronic platform allows the renewal of licenses throughout the year. However, in case the marketing authorisation is not renewed by 11 March 2025, owners will be charged a fine, which includes a fixed fee of €10 and a 10% surcharge on the amount of the registration certificate.

Deletion of non-renewed vehicles and immobilisation procedure

The TFT recalls that vehicles that have not renewed their license for 2024 and have not been declared immobilized will be removed from the register if the renewal is not completed by March 11, 2025.

Those who do not intend to renew their vehicle license for 2025 should submit a declaration of immobilization through the TFT website (https://rtd.mcw.gov.cy). Otherwise, the obligation to pay the road tax will continue to exist.

In cases of vehicle destruction, an application for cancellation of registration (form TOM 98A) and the presentation of a Certificate of Destruction from licensed vehicle waste treatment facilities are required.

Vehicles exempted from electronic renewal

License renewal can be done exclusively online, with the exception of specific vehicle categories, such as:

  • Diplomatic mission vehicles
  • Private buses for large families
  • Vehicles belonging to quarries
  • Antique vehicles with special license (€25 fee)
  • Vehicles owned by the United Nations or other international organizations

For these categories, owners should contact the local TFT Funds for payment of road tax.

No notifications for renewal

The TFT has not sent individual notifications for the renewal of marketing authorisations. Therefore, owners are required to undertake the timely renewal of their own accord in order to avoid charges or deletion of the vehicle from the register.

Call for early renewal

The TFT advises owners not to wait for the last few days for the refresh, as there is a risk of overloading the system, which can cause delays and inconvenience.

The online renewal process is available 24/7 through the TUM website and is the easiest way to complete the process.
