The renewal of vehicle registration for 2025 started in January.
According to the Department of Road Transportation (TUM), the last day of renewal will be Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at midnight.
Moreover, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafeadis told CNA on Saturday that the Ministry is in the process of preparing decrees in relation to vehicle recalls following the issue that arose with the problematic Takata airbags, saying that the decrees will be sent to the Legal Service for legislative scrutiny in a week.
Regarding the conduct of roadworthiness tests (MOTs) and renewal of vehicle registration certificates, the Minister of Transport said that for vehicles that have been informed through the TFT website that they are being recalled (such as Mazda Demio, Honda and others), there has been no obstacle to the conduct of the MOT, as it has not yet been decided how to handle them.
He said, however, that there is another category of cars that are being recalled, which are of European origin and vehicles for which dealers have repeatedly informed the owners of these vehicles to come forward and make their recalls and have ignored these letters. According to the Minister, these vehicles will be able to renew their registration once they finish the recall.
Marketing authorisations may be renewed for periods of three, six, nine and twelve months. Marketing authorisations will be renewed until midnight on Tuesday 11.3.2025 free of charge. For renewals made after Tuesday 11.3.2025, the sum of the amount of €10 and an amount equal to ten percent (10%) of the marketing authorization corresponding to the amount due for the current year is imposed as a charge.
A certificate of suitability and safety should be available for the renewal of the marketing authorisation.
The TFT advises the public to arrange for the renewal of their vehicle registration in a timely manner and in any case, not to wait for the last few days in order to avoid possible overloading of the system that may cause inconvenience.
It is reminded that those who had renewed their vehicle registration for the year 2024 but do not intend to renew it for the year 2025 should submit to the TFT a notice for immobilization of the vehicle.

Otherwise, the obligation to pay the amount corresponding to the circulation tax continues to exist. Vehicles for which their registration has not been renewed for the year 2024 and have not been declared immobilized will be deleted from the TFT register if the amount due for the year 2024 is not paid and their registration for 2025 is renewed by midnight on Tuesday 11.3.2025. In case of destruction of the vehicle, an application for cancellation of vehicle registration (form TOM 98A) accompanied by the "Certificate of Destruction" issued by licensed vehicle waste treatment facilities must be submitted to the TFT in order to exempt the owner of the vehicle from the obligation to pay road tax from the date of destruction of the vehicle.
Please note that marketing authorisations can only be renewed throughout the year online. Excluded are vehicles belonging to embassies, private buses of large families, vehicles belonging to quarries, old vehicles (antiques) with a special permit (paying the amount of 25 euros), vehicles belonging to the United Nations, and vehicles belonging to other organizations with exemption code 04 (and do not hold passwords to the Department's system) for which their owners should apply to the Funds for payment the registration fees for their vehicles.
It is reminded that no notifications will be sent to vehicle owners for the renewal of registration certificates and vehicle owners must update their contact details, registered in the TFT register, in order to be able to receive information (e.g. notification of recalls) about their vehicles.
