 Pafos Press 12 February 2025

Public funding for two important projects in the Inia district was secured by Akamas Mayor Marinos Lambrou in collaboration with Inea Deputy Mayor Iago Tsivikos last week.

According to Akamas Mayor Marinos Lambrou, through the agreement signed with the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, the services provided to visitors for the Turtle Museum, the thematic "Aphrodite" Route are being upgraded, while the Basketry Museum in the Municipal District of Inea is also being upgraded with the amount of €45,000. A variety of basketry items are exhibited at the Basketry Museum.

Mr. Lambrou mentioned that the Basketry Museum area houses a large collection of basketry items, traditional handicrafts with baskets and woven fabrics, preserving and showcasing the village's tradition to tourists.

Among other things, the Inea Basketry Museum also displays trays, wall decorations, handmade fishing nets and various containers.

As Mr. Lambrou mentioned, basketry flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the main purpose being the manufacture of baskets for the collection and transport of carobs, grapes, olives and other agricultural products. Other baskets were also used for shopping, as laundry baskets or baskets for fishermen. Today, tourist basketry items are made as souvenirs, with this art disappearing over the years.

As for the Turtle Museum, according to the Deputy Mayor of Inea, Iago Tsiviko, it is a museum of modern European standards that is a magnet for locals and foreigners.
