Alec Cumming’s vibrant new exhibition lands in Limassol
A captivating solo exhibition by renowned British contemporary artist Alec Cumming opens in Limassol this week at The Edit Gallery. The artist, known for his vibrant, multifaceted painting style, continues to explore the dynamic intersection of abstraction and figuration, presenting an evolved perspective in this latest body of work. His exhibition How Did I Get Here? will run from Thursday to March 15.
This exhibition highlights Cumming’s signature celebration of life, now enhanced by a fresh focus on isolated moments and details. Smaller oil-on-canvas works draw attention to fragments from larger compositions, while expansive pieces seamlessly blend abstract and figurative elements, subtly revealing the human form.
The title, How Did I Get Here?, encapsulates the artist’s playful yet introspective exploration of identity and place, inviting viewers to connect deeply with the works – and themselves. It evokes a reflective question that could just as easily be posed by the figures within the paintings, blurring the boundaries between artist, artwork and audience.
Cumming’s artistic practice has been profoundly influenced by his travels, particularly his time in Cyprus. The island’s landscapes and cultural heritage have enriched his visual language, inspiring vibrant symbols and shapes that capture fleeting impressions and spark curiosity and joy. As the artist explains, his work is about “that funny thing the brain does when it captures something pleasing, causing the eyes to linger – a subconscious satisfaction.”
His voyages’ cross-cultural inspiration often feature in the artist’s work which has been exhibited globally. Cummings’ artwork has appeared at the India Art Fair nine times, where he was recognised as ‘the one to watch’ in 2016.
During his three years at the NIV Art Centre in New Delhi, Cumming developed his practice and created the monumental Dialogues with India series. He began collaborating with The Edit Gallery in Cyprus in 2019. His relationship with Cyprus continues to inspire his work, enriching his vibrant visual language with impressions of the island’s landscapes and culture.
His upcoming Limassol exhibition, How Did I Get Here? invites viewers into a contemplative and interactive dialogue, weaving narratives of the real and imagined, and celebrating the profound beauty of life’s small moments.
