 Cyprus Mail 27 February 2025

Limassol and Larnaca were selected to be included in the shortlist of shortlisted candidate cities in Cyprus for the European Capital of Culture 2030. The result of the expert group was announced today at a press conference at the Deputy Ministry of Culture. In the next, final selection stage, which will take place around the end of 2025, the team will nominate a city from Cyprus to be awarded the title of European Capital of Culture 2030.

The teams of Limassol and Larnaca expressed their enthusiasm and joy as soon as it was announced that they are the shortlisted candidate cities of Cyprus. Larnaca in a statement "warmly congratulates all the co-candidate cities, those that passed as well as those that did not make it." We all envisioned a more beautiful tomorrow with cultural development as a vehicle and this can only lead to a clear upgrading of our cities. As a team we are excited and excited. We would like to thank from the bottom of our hearts the hundreds of co-creators of our program, the municipalities and communities of our province who are committed to the great goal of seeing Larnaca become the European Capital of Culture in 2030, our sponsors, as well as our fellow citizens who shared and warmly support this great effort", comments the Larnaca team.

The selection committee consists of ten members appointed by the European institutions and bodies and two members, Athena Aristotelous Kliridou and Marios Ioannou Elias, appointed by the Deputy Minister of Culture. The five candidate cities, Ayia Napa, Kourion, Larnaca, Limassol and Nicosia, had presented their vision and plans to the committee of 12 European experts in February.

The Deputy Ministry of Culture, as the competent managing authority, is responsible for conducting the competition for the selection of the city of Cyprus, which will receive the title of European Capital of Culture for the year 2030. The whole process is organised in close cooperation with the European Commission. The title of European Capital of Culture will be awarded in 2030 to a city in Cyprus, a city in Belgium and a city in a third country (candidate country or potential candidate for EU membership).

We note that Cyprus hosted the institution for the first time in 2017, with Pafos being the first city in Cyprus to be named European Capital of Culture.
