The Department of Customs and Excise, following a relevant decision of the Nicosia District Court, handed over today to the Department of Antiquities an ancient ecclesiastical book under the name "BIBLE ENANNOUSIOS AND PANKTEKTOS" dating back to 1795 AD.
The ancient bible was found and confiscated by officers of the Department of Customs and Excise on 26/6/2018, during a vehicle inspection at the Agios Dometios crossing point. The Bible was carried in his vehicle by a Greek Cypriot from the occupied areas to the free areas. Both the Police and the Department of Antiquities were informed about the seizure of the ancient book, which undertook the further investigation of the case, which eventually ended up before the Nicosia District Court.
On 22/1/2025, by letter, the Police informed the Department of Customs and Excise that the Court's decision is that the ancient Bible should come into and remain in the possession of the Department of Antiquities. The delivery of the book took place today, Tuesday 25/2/2025 at the Chief Customs Office.
The above action is part of the ongoing efforts of the Department of Customs and Excise for the protection of the cultural heritage of Cyprus and the fight against the illicit trafficking of antiquities, while underlining the importance of cooperation between the competent authorities for the preservation of the history and heritage of our country.
