PAPHOS - A DIFFICULT SUMMER AHEAD

 Paphos Live 26 January 2025

A difficult summer awaits the district of Pafos in relation to the water supply of municipalities and communities, which is mainly based on the two refineries operating at the dams of Asprokremos and Kanavious. The summer will also be extremely difficult for farmers, after the loss of Mavrokolymbos' water quantities.

Given the low occupancy of the dams, so far, but also the recent destruction of the only desalination plant in the province, the immediate operation of mobile desalination plants is imperative. The President of the Pafos EDA, Charalambos Pittokopitis, calls for the acceleration of the operating procedures of mobile desalination plants.

Mr. Pittokopitis called on the state to find ways to overcome any legal obstacles and time-consuming procedures for the mobile units, while he also reiterated the earlier proposal for the creation of two additional dams in the province, one on the river of Ezousa next to the village of Episkopi and one on the river Diarizos near the village of Souskiou. Intervention by the President of the Pafos EDA and to meet the needs in the primary sector.

Mr. Pittokopitis reminded that the dams have been built to support agriculture and finally, due to wrong policies and management in recent years, the water of the dams covers a large percentage of the country's water supply.
