DROUGHT - SECOND WORST OF ALL TIME THIS JANUARY IN RAIN - VERY SERIOUS WATER PROBLEM

 Filenews 27 January 2025

January 2025 ranks as the second-worst January since 1901, in terms of rainfall. According to the Department of Meteorology, last week (20-26 January) may have been rainy for the most part, giving beneficial rains throughout the island and especially in the western half of it and in the mountains, however, they did not help to fill the huge deficit in terms of the percentage of total rainfall for the month.

In a statement today, the Department of Meteorology says that January is only 17% of its normal month, placing it in the penultimate place in the ranking of the rainiest Januarys (at least with rainfall data so far). "The driest January in the history of our island is January 1997, with 12.3min of rain, while to date this January is the 2nd driest January with 17.2mm of rain," he says.

Until next Thursday, 30/1, unfortunately no rain is expected and it will be difficult to change this negative record of drought for this January and by extension for the water balance of the island.
