Following the latest incident, the industry is once again calling on the state to urgently bring the fan associations bill to pass.

At a speed of 218 kilometers, instead of up to 100 which is the maximum speed limit, on the Ayia Napa-Larnaka highway, at the height of Aradippou, a 32-year-old man was spotted driving his car around 11.40 noon on Thursday.

The 32-year-old was stopped for inspection and arrested by members of the Road Accident Prevention Unit – OPOD, of the Traffic Headquarters Department.

He was driven with his vehicle to the Aradippou Police Station, where at the end of the police examinations, he was charged in writing and released, to appear before a Court, tomorrow Friday, for trial of the case.

Driving at excessive speed results in the driver having a reduced ability to control and drive his vehicle, as well as reduced perception of the road network, while increasing the severity of a collision. It has been proven to be a major factor in causing serious and fatal road collisions.

The Police places particular emphasis on dealing with this serious traffic offence, with daily checks and coordinated operations, but also with continuous information to the public. The aim is always to prevent serious and fatal road collisions, to cultivate road awareness and to increase the sense of safety of citizens who commute daily on the road network.

The 25-year-old, who has been in custody since yesterday on suspicion of the attempted murder in Limassol that took place last Monday, was recently released early on parole following a conviction for a serious drug case.

Before surrendering to the authorities, the young man was wanted on the basis of testimonies. They wanted him to shoot a pistol and wound a 39-year-old Greek Cypriot man in the leg on December 30, while a day later, after searches of the house where he lived, packages containing quantities of cannabis and cocaine were found.

The 25-year-old of Egyptian origin, who grew up in Cyprus and speaks Greek fluently, in February 2022 was sentenced to seven years in prison by the Limassol Assize Court for possession with intent to supply a quantity of cocaine weighing a total of 412.8 grams. He had pleaded guilty to the aforementioned charge.

Every year of imprisonment imposed on a convicted person is equivalent to nine months of imprisonment. In this case, the sentence of 7 years in prison corresponded to 5 years and 3 months and began to be calculated from May 2020, when he was detained as an undertrial.

As it turns out, the 25-year-old, after serving half of the aforementioned sentence, submitted a request to the Parole Board, which in 2024 decided to release him on parole. Inevitably, this decision by this competent body, the establishment of which is provided for by the Prison Law, was put in the spotlight.

"F" reports that during the process of examining the aforementioned person's request, the latter had alleged involvement in the case of 412.8 grams of cocaine in a wrong decision in his life, which would not be repeated.

He had said that until 2020 his criminal record was clean. It should be noted that indeed during his conviction in February 2022 for the possession case with the aim of supply, this parameter was taken into account. The Limassol Assize Court in its relevant verdict noted, inter alia: "Accused 1 has been in custody since 29/5/2020 and accused 2 since 11/2/2022. Both defendants, it was said, have no criminal record."

It should be noted that the 25-year-old's request had been considered during the tenure of the previous Board of Parole on Leave. This was appointed under Nikos Anastasiades in October 2022 and had a three-year term (Alexia Lycourgou, Theodora Kamara, Maro Antoniou, Stavros Mavrommatis, Lambros Samartzis).

Questions are also raised about the conditions set for the release of the person in question. Under the law, the Parole Board decides on the conditions and restrictions set, as well as imposing conditions for the supervision of the early releasee. In the case of the 25-year-old, drugs were found, as well as evidence of pistol use.
