A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued by the National Weather Service for the weekend.
The warning comes into effect at 11am on Saturday and remains in effect until 4am on Sunday.
According to the Department of Meteorology, isolated strong storms are expected to affect the western half and southern areas of the island at intervals.
The intensity of the rain is expected to vary between 35 and 50 millimeters per hour, while hail is also possible. Temporarily during the storms the wind gusts can reach up to 7 Beaufort.
Weak low pressure is affecting the area while low pressure is expected from today
Saturday the weather will initially be mainly clear with locally increased clouds in the west and north, which may give isolated showers. From midday onwards it will become mostly cloudy with showers in several areas and isolated thunderstorms, while a thunderstorm is also likely to bring hail. Locally, mainly in the western half and the south of the island, the effects may be intense. The winds will be southwest, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort and the sea will be a little rough to rough. The temperature will rise to around 19 degrees in the interior and on the coasts and around 8 degrees in the higher mountains.
Saturday night the weather will continue to be mostly cloudy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. In a storm, hail is also possible. Winds will be southwesterly, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort and transient locally to very strong, 5 to 6 Beaufort. The sea will be rough.
On Sunday, isolated rains or even a storm are expected in the morning, however the weather will soon improve significantly and become mostly clear with locally increased clouds at intervals.
On Monday, the weather will be mostly cloudy with local rain and isolated storms, while sleet or snow may fall on the highest peaks of Troodos.
On Tuesday, increased clouds are expected to give local rain and an isolated storm mainly after noon.
The temperature is not expected to change significantly on Sunday, while a small drop is expected on Monday. On Tuesday, a small increase is expected to fluctuate during the three days close to the average climatic values.
