PHAEDON PHAEDONOS THREW DOWN THE GAUNTLET - PAPACHRISTOFI COVERED UP ILLEGALITY - THE WAR OF THE MAYORS CONTINUES

Filenews 20 December 2024

The war of announcements and insinuations of interests on both sides continues, which broke out in the morning in Pafos, starring the Mayors of Pafos and Polis Chrysochous and focusing on a hotel under construction in Latchi.

It is recalled that Phedon Phedonos denounced the fact that the three-storey building was being erected without any permission and under the cover of some for many months, while Yiotis Papachristofi attributed to his colleague in Pafos personal and suspicious motives for his stance.

With a written announcement, the Mayor of Pafos returned in the afternoon in response to what the Mayor of Polis says.

Mr. Papachristofi covered up the illegality and collaborated with those who committed a huge illegality within the boundaries of his municipality and is now trying to hide behind his anxiety to develop in his area, Phedonas Phedonos stressed.

In September 2023, he said, construction work began on the hotel, although the planning permission obtained after the start of building works, that is, on October 27, 2023, was for a two-storey building and not for a hotel because the zone of the plot did not allow it.

They were building virtually without any permit, neither planning nor building permit. Even more surprising and more illegal was that for 9 months they finally built a hotel with three floors while only holding planning permission for 2-storey buildings.

On May 30, 2024 and after the skeleton was built almost entirely with the 3 floors, they were served with an enforcement notice with a huge delay by the Director of the Department of Town Planning and Housing to stop the construction works, which they did not do but continued until they completed the three-storey skeleton with the tolerance and disguise of specific individuals.

On June 7, 2024, i.e. 2 days before the local government elections, the zone of the plot in which the illegal building was located was changed in such a way that the construction of three-storey buildings and even hotels was now allowed. To date, no permit has been obtained to cover the three-storey building and curiously no legal action has been taken against the huge illegality and those who carried it out. That is, 15 months after the construction of the illegal building began, the state and those responsible failed to function. They have only worked towards the subsequent legalisation of illegalities. This is not a state, nor a rule of law.

As Mayor of Pafos, I certainly want the development of the Polis Chrysochous area, with major and important projects and the progress of every individual, he concludes. But this is one thing, and it is quite another for some people in the underground to cover-up to baptize their illegal actions as love for projects and development. The companies involved in this case have been active for years and the Municipality and the Mayor of Pafos have never dealt with them. In this case, where the illegalities were great and glaring, the Mayor of Polis should seek the alien purposes in himself and those around him.
