GENDER EQUALITY - CYPRUS 20th IN THE EU

 Filenews 10 December 2024

Cyprus was upgraded to 20th place among the 27 Member States of the European Union, from 21st place in 2023, in Gender Equality Indicators, according to the Report of the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), with the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Josie Christodoulou, noting, after the publication of the Report, that "our constant goal is to accelerate the promotion of gender equality in all areas of life and to establish a culture of equality between women and men".

According to EIGE's Report on Gender Equality Indicators for the year 2024, which was presented today at the Gender Equality Forum in Brussels, Cyprus has been upgraded to 20th place among the 27 EU Member States, from 21st place in 2023.

It is underlined that the Report confirms the steady progress made by Cyprus in the field of gender equality, as noted by other reports, such as the World Economic Forum report, which has upgraded Cyprus to 86th place (2024) from 106 (2023) and the UN report on the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, which ranks Cyprus 39th out of 139 countries.

"The overall progress recorded is an important step for our country but in no way justifies complacency," it said.

At the same time, it is noted that the Report "is a useful tool in our effort to continue the upward trend in the areas where Cyprus is performing well, but mainly for improvement in those areas where the equality gap between women and men is greater".

According to the relevant indicators, Cyprus has made the greatest progress in the areas of work, i.e. equal access to employment and good working conditions, and money, i.e. access to financial resources and economic situation.

In contrast, the lowest degree of equality is recorded in the area of power, which covers the participation of men and women in political, economic and social decision-making processes.

At these three levels, the highest performance is recorded in the participation of women in the Council of Ministers, while their representation in the House of Representatives, in local government, in the Boards of Directors (BoD) of the largest companies listed on the Cyprus Stock Exchange and in the Boards of Directors of public broadcasting and sports organizations is significantly low.

"We continue methodically the implementation of the National Strategy for Gender Equality, in cooperation with all Ministries and Deputy Ministries, with the social partners, the National Mechanism for Women's Rights and with the wider civil society", says the Commissioner for Gender Equality and adds that "our constant goal is to accelerate the promotion of gender equality in all areas of life and to establish a culture of equality between women and men".
