Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said his country and Britain have decided to “turn a new page” in bilateral relations following talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters, Christodoulides highlighted the significance of Starmer’s visit – the first bilateral visit to Cyprus by a British prime minister in 53 years – coming just two months after their meeting in London.
The two leaders agreed to work together on defence and security, investments, energy, education and healthcare, with a second strategic dialogue planned in the UK next week, Christodoulides said.
He noted Britain’s recognition of Cyprus’s regional role and its excellent relations with neighbouring states, pointing out that Starmer arrived in Cyprus after visiting Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
Regarding EU-UK relations, Christodoulides observed “a new approach” from Britain, adding that Cyprus would lead some post-Brexit negotiations during its upcoming EU Council presidency.
On the Cyprus issue, the president emphasised Britain’s important position that any solution must remain within the agreed framework, given the UK’s role in the peace process.
“This new page in our relations will work to benefit both countries and, primarily, their citizens”, Christodoulides concluded.
