CRIME ROUND UP

 Filenews 3 December 2024

Unrest and concern prevail among parents and educational staff of the K' Primary School of Agios Panteleimonas in Limassol, after the latest incident of vandalism and destruction of school property. Minors illegally entered the school premises and destroyed the Christmas decorations, while lighting fires in various outdoor areas of the school unit.

But things are even worse. As reported to Filenews by the Parents Association of the School, the perpetrators seem to have tried to burn the Christmas tree, since as they claim, the tree had a strong smell of oil. The young offenders threw down the tree, which was placed at the entrance of the school (more than 3 meters high) and then destroyed the decorative teddy bears that the students had offered. In addition, violators damaged the basketball court carpet and benches by lighting fires and throwing firecrackers.

Pafos Live 4 December

For days, the anti-narcotics service had gathered information about the activity of a drug trafficking ring in the western low area of Paphos.

Yesterday morning, members of the force, after assessing information, stopped for inspection, a car driven by a 37-year-old man on the Paphos-Limassol motorway. In a search, cannabis weighing 4 kg and approximately 820 grams was found inside the vehicle and confiscated.

Subsequently, a court warrant searched the premises of a 48-year-old man, in a rural area of Paphos, in the presence of himself, the 37-year-old and the 33-year-old, where cannabis weighing approximately 29 kg and 455 grams was found in a plastic water tank and confiscated, as well as a precision scale.

Judicial arrest warrants were issued against the three suspects, under which they were arrested and detained to facilitate interrogations. The foreigners, permanent residents of Cyprus, who are expected to be brought before the Pafos court today for the issuance of detention orders, refuse to answer the questions of the investigators in the case.

The members of the YKAN are trying to identify primarily how this large quantity of drugs was imported to the island and those involved in the ring, in addition to the two arrested.

Update - 3 under 8 day detention

The 64-year-old defendant in the case of underage girls who claimed to have been sexually harassed by him did not appear in the dock yesterday. The judge of the Limassol District Court ordered his immediate arrest, activating the unexecuted arrest warrant issued in the previous hearing. Today's closed-door hearing was set for the 64-year-old to be charged in the multi-page indictment.

As Filenews is authoritatively informed, the 64-year-old had not even appeared at the previous hearing, with the Court issuing an arrest warrant, which however remained unexecuted, as the accused was being treated in a hospital. During today's proceedings he again did not appear, leading the judge to order the execution of the arrest warrant for his appearance in court. The same information states that the accused will no longer be represented by legal counsel. The lawyer representing him did not appear at the trial after the 64-year-old never answered her phone calls.

The multi-page indictment includes 15 charges relating to offences against three complaining girls, two of whom are minors. Specifically, the indictment includes offences of sexual abuse and harassment, indecent assault, common assault as well as supplying tobacco and supplying alcohol to a minor.

It is noted that on September 5, during the registration of the case, the Court ordered that the accused be released with restrictive conditions, while an order was issued not to approach the complainants less than 100 meters away and not to communicate with them in any way. At the time, the defendant had applied for legal aid, with the Court instructing the preparation of a report by the Welfare Office.

It is recalled that the Police, from the first moment of the 64-year-old's complaint in the robbery case, separated the case concerning the robbery itself from the complaints of the underage girls about their abuse, which are under the custody of the state.

A hospital and two hotels were sent threatening messages to pay a ransom or a bomb would explode on their premises.

Initially, the emails were sent to a hospital in Nicosia from which an amount of €25,000 was requested, otherwise a bomb supposedly planted would be activated.

The other two emails were sent to two hotels in Limassol, from which the sender this time demanded payment of €75,000 in "bitcoin" cryptocurrencies, otherwise he threatened to explode a bomb.

After receiving the messages, a complaint was made to the Police, which immediately mobilized, searched the premises of all three premises without detecting anything suspicious.

The sender of the threatening messages is now being sought through the Cybercrime Bureau. The authorities are vigilant against any continuation of threats from the same direction.
