The Paphos Permanent Assize Court yesterday imposed a seven-year prison sentence for the robbery committed at an optical shop in Paphos, in June, 2023, on a 56-year-old man. The 56-year-old was given concurrent prison sentences of four and two years by the Permanent Assize Court for the offences of burglary of the shop and theft of property from it.
According to the evidence collected by the Police and presented by the Prosecution before the Permanent Assize Court of Pafos, on June 18, 2023, shortly before 5.00 in the morning, the alarm system of an optical store in Paphos sounded. Relatives of the owner rushed to the store, where they found outside the store, a suspicious person, who retrieved a knife and attacked them, injuring one of them, a 27-year-old man, in the right arm. The suspect then fled.
Members of the Police conducted examinations at the scene, where the burglary of the store was found. According to the complaint filed with the police, around 100 pairs of glasses had been stolen from the store. Outside the store, where the suspect was seen, 38 pairs of glasses stolen from the store were found inside a cardboard box.

The Pafos Permanent Assize Court yesterday imposed an eight-year prison sentence for offences of possession and dissemination of child pornography material on a 22-year-old man.
The 22-year-old was arrested last June by members of the Police and specifically the Cybercrime Subdivision, as part of the investigation into the case of sexual abuse of minors.
The investigation of the case began after information received by the police through Europol that a user of an account on an online social networking platform uploaded and sent files of sexual abuse of minors.
This was followed by examinations by members of the Cybercrime Subdivision, from which the identity of the 22-year-old perpetrator was ascertained. A judicial arrest warrant was issued against him, under which he was arrested by members of the Police, on August 17, 2024.
In a search of his residence, a laptop computer and a mobile phone were found and confiscated for forensic examination.
The 22-year-old was detained pursuant to a court order, while at the end of the examinations, the Police proceeded to the immediate registration of the case for trial by the Permanent Assize Court of Pafos.
After the Permanent Assize Court examined the evidence collected by the Police and presented before it by the Prosecution, it found the 22-year-old guilty and imposed on him concurrent prison sentences, with a longer sentence of eight years' imprisonment, for the offence of distributing, disseminating or transmitting child pornography.

A case of premeditated murder, involving a 62-year-old resident of Limassol, is being investigated by the Police. To facilitate interrogations, the victim's 63-year-old wife was arrested and detained.
Around 9:40 p.m. yesterday, information was received to the Police about an injured man in an apartment in Limassol. Members of the Police went to the scene, where they found in the living room of his apartment, 62-year-old Vitaly Shostak, from Ukraine, who had a chest wound, from a sharp object and had no vital signs. Next to the 62-year-old, a kitchen knife was found and taken as evidence.
A coroner was called to the scene and conducted an autopsy, who certified the 62-year-old's death.
As part of the investigation of the case, the investigators of the ICF of Limassol issued a judicial arrest warrant against the 63-year-old wife of the victim. The 63-year-old was arrested at dawn today and taken into custody to facilitate interrogations.

Another turn has taken the case of the fire that broke out a month ago on the fourth floor of an apartment building on the busy Omonia Avenue where the two tenants were trapped on the balcony of their burning apartment.
For the case, the 30-year-old arson suspect, the 70-year-old woman's stepson, was arrested and brought before the Limassol District Court for a request for detention.
The 30-year-old was initially taken to Athalassa Hospital for treatment. Subsequently, after receiving the appropriate treatment, he was deemed fit to attend the court proceedings and was discharged. Subsequently, the investigators of the ICF of Limassol proceeded to arrest him with a pending court warrant and the 30-year-old was arrested on suspicion of arson of the apartment.
From the examinations and testimonies obtained, he is alleged to be the person who set the fire in the apartment where he and the 70-year-old woman lived.
The Court approved the Police's request and ordered the suspect's detention for a period of 3 days.
It is recalled that after the fire, the 70-year-old was hospitalized by intubation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Nicosia General Hospital, as she suffered a respiratory burn and a second-degree burn on the back.
After the fire broke out inside their apartment, the two residents were trapped on the balcony and rescued after the timely intervention of the Fire Brigade, which extricated them using a telescopic armoured vehicle.

The Pafos Police Department has been put on alert after a dead man was found in a building being erected.
According to the first information from the police, this morning, around 11:00, a person who visited a two-storey building in the area of Kissonerga for work purposes, found a man of unknown identity, dead at the bottom of the elevator hatch.
The scene has been cordoned off and examinations are underway to establish the circumstances of his death. The arrival of the on-duty coroner is also awaited.
For now, all possibilities remain open.
