A rescue operation for a Nicosia gamekeeper who fell into a cliff 100 meters deep in the permanently prohibited area of the "Foukasa" mine, in Katydata, was set up at noon by the Fire Brigade, EMAK, the Air Wing of the Police and the Ambulance Service.

According to information, it all started around 12 noon, when a patrol of the Game Service noticed three people doing illegal hunting with their dogs in the excavations of the mine "Foukasa", which is adjacent to the buffer zone and the occupied areas and is a permanently prohibited hunting area.

One of the gamekeepers then invited them to stop for a check, and instead of complying, they fled, resulting in a fierce chase.

When at some point the gamekeeper approached them at a distance of 20-25 meters, the three poachers turned their shotguns towards him in a threatening manner.

The latter, before the danger to his life, tried to protect himself, as a result of which he stepped on an unstable spot and began to fall down a cliff 100 meters deep, at the bottom of which there was water with acid.

Luckily, the gamekeeper managed to stop at some point on the downhill and started calling for help. The shift manager then alerted the Fire Brigade, the EMAK, the Police and an ambulance, who set up a long rescue operation.

They initially tried to save the gamekeeper with ropes, but it was impossible due to the location and the instability of the terrain. So the police helicopter was called to "Foukasa", where a rescuer descended with special equipment to the spot and saved the gamekeeper, who was handed over to the ambulance crew for transfer to Nicosia General Hospital.  The gamekeeper went through a series of medical examinations and is reportedly in good health, with the Police and Game Service making efforts to locate and arrest the poachers.
