The United Nations is expected to file a complaint with the Republic Police after the incident in the Deryneia buffer zone with farmers on Friday morning.
According to information provided to Filenews by UNFICYP, one peacekeeper was slightly injured, while three UN vehicles were damaged. According to UNFICYP, farmers with tractors hit peacekeepers' vehicles whilst they were cultivating fields in the buffer zone, for which there was no required permit. "Cultivation near the ceasefire line within the buffer zone is strictly prohibited because it can cause tension," UNFICYP said on our website.
Meanwhile, in statements to CNA, Andreas Constantinou, spokesman of the Famagusta Police Directorate, said that "at around 9.30 this morning information was received at the Deryneia Police Station by members of the United Nations that a Greek Cypriot farmer with his employees went to the area of Frenarous – Vrysoulla, within the buffer zone and started cultivating fields at the point not permitted by the United Nations."
He added that "members of the United Nations tried to stop the farmer and his employees from continuing to cultivate the fields, causing tension and conflict between them. The tension caused damage to UN vehicles, while the farmer and/or his employees attacked members of the force."
As Mr. Constantinou said, "an official complaint is expected to be submitted by the men of the United Nations to the Deryneia Police for investigation of the incident."

The Supreme Court has decided to overturn a court decision annulling a warrant for the arrest of a suspect for attempted murder.
The arrest warrant against a suspect for attempted murder in July at a café in Strovolos, was issued on 12.7.2024, by the Nicosia District Court for the purpose of investigating serious criminal offences, including attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
The arrested person appealed to the Supreme Court seeking the annulment of the arrest warrant with a Privileged Warrant Certiorari. He was granted permission for one reason only, which was whether the police did not carry out and/or withhold "material information at the stage of requesting the warrant".
A judge ruled in favour of the applicant and annulled the arrest warrant after finding that the police had failed to refer to facts "which are directly relevant to the formation of the appropriate judgment in the circumstances by the lower Court........... I consider that it deprived him of the opportunity to have an overall assessment of the case in the light of all the facts and elements essential to the case, with the result that the lawfulness of the warrant was affected in the present case."
According to today's decision of three Supreme Court judges, the facts which, according to the Court of First Instance, had not been disclosed, concerned that the Police, on the basis of "credible" witness material, had previously obtained an arrest warrant against another person, whom they considered to be the perpetrator of the crimes under investigation.
As the three judges find, the fact that a person is arrested as a suspect by the Police, on the basis of "credible" testimony, and then released, does not prevent the Police from claiming an arrest warrant against another person on the basis of witness material, which may include part of the witness material used to obtain the previous arrest warrant.
However, what tipped the scales for the annulment of the first instance judgment was, as the Supreme Court points out, the fact that in the request for an arrest warrant against the respondent, there was an additional important element, which was not present in the previous witness material. And this was the information obtained by the Police, according to which, the respondent had allegedly admitted "to his close circle" the bombing that the Police were investigating.
In conclusion, we do not consider, in the light of what was put before the lower Court, which issued the arrest warrant, that there was a concealment of essential facts, especially those that affected the lawfulness of his extradition.
