Police arrested a 29-year-old resident of a village in the Paphos district yesterday to facilitate investigations into an ongoing case of illegal possession of drugs, reckless and dangerous driving and other traffic offences.
The arrest of the 29-year-old was eventful, after a chase of the vehicle he was driving, on roads in the Paphos district. Specifically, around 10 a.m. yesterday, while members of the Polis Chrysochous Police Station were conducting traffic checks, on a road in the village of Goudi, in the Paphos district, they spotted a car moving on this road without bearing registration plates.
The police signalled the driver to stop for control, but he developed speed and tried to flee. Members of the Police followed the vehicle, the driver of which was driving dangerously. In an attempt to intercept the vehicle, police fired warning shots. The suspect vehicle was eventually stopped on a road in Prodromi.
It was found that the driver of the vehicle was a 29-year-old resident of a village in the Paphos district. During a subsequent search of the car, small quantities of cannabis and methamphetamine were found and seized, resulting in the 29-year-old being arrested for both the offence of illegal possession of drugs and traffic offences.
Further examinations revealed that the car the 29-year-old was driving was registered as immobilised and was not covered by a certificate of fitness and an insurance certificate. It was also found that the colour of the vehicle has changed, without informing the Superintendent of the Licensing Authority.
The 29-year-old was charged in writing with the above traffic offences, and was subsequently arrested under a court warrant pending against him for non-appearance in a case, which is being heard at the Pafos District Court.

A total of 10,582 out-of-court complaints for various traffic offences resulted from traffic police checks carried out by members of the Police on motorways and secondary roads all over Cyprus during November.
The Pancyprian traffic controls were carried out, as part of the Police's efforts to prevent road traffic collisions, the consolidation of proper road awareness, the prevention and suppression of nuisance offences by cars and motorcycles and juvenile delinquency.
The majority of complaints received concerned offences which have been proven to be the main causes of serious and fatal road collisions. Of these, 3,037 complaints stand out, which were made for exceeding the speed limit.
At the same time, there were 217 complaints for driving under the influence of alcohol, 804 complaints for non-free hands while driving (use of a mobile phone), 682 complaints for not wearing a seat belt and 168 for not wearing a protective helmet.
The members of the Police also issued 524 out-of-court complaints for offences related to illegal parking of vehicles. Of these, 146 concerned illegal parking in disabled parking lots.
The remaining 4,850 out-of-court complaints, issued by members of the Police, concern various other traffic offences.
It should be noted that the above figures refer only to offenses for which out-of-court complaints have been issued, while for other traffic offenses for which a file has been formed and will be brought before a Court, no reference is made. There is also no reference to complaints made through the photo-labelling system.
Targeted traffic checks continue daily, around the clock, throughout the road network all over Cyprus. The sole objective is the consolidation of proper road awareness by all road users and the prevention of fatal and serious road collisions.
