Police were advised by a 42-year-old woman that between the hours of 8 a.m. – 5.15p.m. yesterday, unknown assailants broke into warehouses of an apartment building in Nicosia and stole various items, including a suitcase.

Members of the Police went to the scene, where during examinations and patrols, they spotted in the area a 38-year-old man, searching inside a suitcase, which resembled the one that had been stolen. The 38-year-old did not give sufficient explanations for his possession and was arrested for the offence of unlawful possession of property.

Also located next to the suspect were a travel bag containing silverware, a bag with food, a tool box, bags of various brands, etc., which were identified by the 42-year-old as part of the stolen property.

A nylon bag containing a mixed amount of drugs was also located and seized.

The 38-year-old is expected to appear before a court today for a detention order.

The ICF Nicosia continues the examinations.

The procedure at the Nicosia District Court to examine the request for detention of the three suspects in connection with the armed robberies of kiosks in Tseri and Agios Dometios on December 2 and 11, respectively, was anything but formal. These felonies are accompanied by arson of a vehicle and shooting with a pistol (in the first robbery)

The 1st suspect, a 21-year-old from Syria, shortly before the District Judge Andreas Loizou interrupted the proceedings to issue his decision, reported before the bench that the 22-year-old 3rd suspect in the same case threatened him today directly in the detention facilities of the Courts before the start of the proceedings.

He claimed, specifically, that the 3rd suspect threatened him and the 2nd suspect (22-year-old). The 21-year-old, with the help of the translator, said in Arabic that the 3rd suspect told them the following: "I will remain free and you will be waiting for you in prison with my family." The 3rd suspect expressed surprise at the above allegation, turning to the investigator of the case, wanting to indicate that this never happened.

Here it should be noted that the 3rd suspect was involved in the robbery case under investigation by the 1st (21-year-old) and the 2nd suspect (22-year-old). The latter two were arrested shortly before midnight on December 11 in Limassol driving a Honda HRV, which ICF Nicosia investigators believe they used hours earlier (dawn 11/12) in the armed robbery they carried out at the main street kiosk of Agios Dometios.

When the Judge, Andreas Loizou, announced his decision on the detention request after a temporary interruption (he approved it), he did not fail to refer to the claim of the 1st suspect. He said, in particular, addressing the responsible investigator of the ICF of Nicosia, Stefanos Stefanou, "I recommend your attention". He explained that the allegation should be investigated and stressed that "due care" should be exercised by the police.

As far as the substance of the case is concerned, based on what Mr. Stefanou said for the purposes of issuing the 5-day detention order against the suspects, elements that emerged during the investigation of the robbery in Agios Dometios committed at 04:00 in the morning of December 11 played a role in the arrests of the aforementioned three persons.

As he explained, CCTV revealed the type of vehicle used by the perpetrators (painted roof), which is believed to be the same, which was reported stolen in Limassol (28/11).

The first two suspects were stopped by members of the Police on 11/12 (23:30) in Limassol and were arrested after they had determined that the vehicle had been reported as stolen. They then claimed that they had gone to Limassol for fun and that they had been given the vehicle by the 3rd suspect whom they knew. They even accused him of lying to them that it was his. It should be noted that the 3rd suspect was arrested on 14/12.

The investigator of the ICF of Nicosia, in addition to the testimony of the two aforementioned persons, stated that the body type of the two persons who carried out the robberies resembles the 1st and 2nd defendant (he cited CCTV footage), referred to the evidence showing that the vehicle they were travelling in Limassol when they were arrested had exactly the same characteristics as the robbery car, He referred to clothing and gloves found that give rise to reasonable suspicion that the first two suspects were involved in the offences under investigation.

Suspects "1" and "2" appeared without a lawyer, stated that they were not involved in the offences under investigation and that they would cooperate with the police. The lawyer of the 3rd suspect, Chloe Constantinou, submitted repeated questions to the ICF investigator in her attempt to submit that her client's only connection is the allegations of the other two suspects.

She wanted to indicate that the testimony so far does not give rise to a reasonable suspicion that her client is involved in the case and therefore that his detention is not justified. Ms Constantinou also submitted through her questions that the ICF Nicosia received a statement from the 3rd suspect's cohabitant, who gave him an alibi (the investigating judge objected that it is not considered "independent testimony"). She also testified that her client did not know the first two suspects, which was evident during his meeting shortly before they appeared in court.

The axis of the legal argument of the representative of the prosecution, Sotiroulla Michael, was that the testimony of two persons in this case is such that the conditions for detention of the 3rd suspect are met. The District Judge, Andreas Loizou, after a break of about 30 minutes, announced his decision. After first referring to the four parameters taken into account in detention requests, and referring to the facts of the case, he approved the request for 5-day detention.

In bushes in the courtyard of the church of Apostle Andrew in Mesa Geitonia, the minor hid the 26 transparent nylon packages with drugs, believing that no one would suspect him.  The minor, who was acting as a drug transporter, was brought before the Limassol District Court, which in closed proceedings, ordered his detention for a period of 3 days.

As Filenews is aware, the Limassol YKAN received information two days ago that a young person was seen approaching bushes on foot in the courtyard of the church of Apostle Andrew in Mesa Geitonia and examining the spot. Following the information, members of the YKAN went for on-site examinations where they found a quantity of cannabis weighing 875 grams, which was packaged in 26 nylon packages.

From examinations carried out in the area, investigators found CCTV footage, which recorded the movements of the 17-year-old. The minor was identified as the person recorded in the videos and a court arrest warrant was subsequently issued against him.

The minor was located yesterday and then arrested. Under interrogation, in the presence of his lawyer, he respected the right to remain silent and did not want to cooperate with the police. The case is expected to be examined in the area where the drugs were found and about 20 more statements will be taken. The 17-year-old is facing offences of illegal possession of drugs and possession of drugs with intent to supply to other persons.
