Various scenarios have been put under the microscope, without excluding the possibility that his injury was caused by a work accident.

The 71-year-old Greek national, who was arrested last night,  allegedly had the role of sender of large quantities of drugs, and specifically cocaine, and was brought before the Limassol Court on Tuesday morning (10/12) as a suspect in two cases of large quantities of drugs that concerned YKAN two years ago. The 71-year-old appeared in court without being represented by a lawyer and was detained for a period of three days.

According to Filenews, the 71-year-old was wanted by Cypriot authorities since June 2022, following a European arrest warrant issued in both cases. According to the same information, the suspect had been scientifically linked through genetic material (DNA) after tests were done on the drugs of the two cases. It should be noted that for both cases another person is wanted with a European and International warrant.

On 8/8/2024, the German authorities informed the Cypriot Police that they had arrested the 71-year-old in the context of an investigation of a serious drug case that took place in Germany and France, involving 19 kilos of cocaine. On 27/11 the German authorities informed about the surrender of the suspect. Therefore, the day before yesterday, members of the Limassol YKAN went to Germany, where they picked up the suspect and transported him to Cyprus, where he was arrested at Larnaca airport under the court warrants pending against him.

As Filenews learns, when questioned orally, the suspect, regarding his involvement in the 1st case, said that he knows the 58-year-old convict but does not know the 62-year-old. He also claimed that expensive cigars were in the package with the quantity of 2.5kg of cocaine. In addition, he said that on the instructions of another person, he arrived in Cyprus in order to register a company that would deal with general trade while he declared ignorance about the company's involvement in the import of drugs.

The 71-year-old, according to the same information on our website, arrived in Cyprus during March 2022, where he had registered a cigar importing company. However, it appears that the suspect approached people from Greece, asking them to go to Cyprus to collect packages of supposedly expensive cigars. In both cases, however, large quantities of drugs, namely cocaine, were imported.

Briefcase with 2.5 kg of cocaine

Specifically, on May 13, 2022, in Limassol, a 58-year-old man was arrested, after a quantity of cocaine weighing 2.5 kg was found in his possession and seized. A 62-year-old woman was also arrested in the same case. The arrest of the two was made possible after information was given to the YKAN. A postal officer handed the 58-year-old a parcel containing the drugs. Subsequently, the members of the YKAN stopped for inspection the 58-year-old who was moving on foot in the area of Germasogeia having in his possession the parcel he received a short time earlier. During the ensuing search, a specially designed briefcase containing the 2 packages of cocaine was found inside the box. The members of the YKAN then handcuffed the 62-year-old and a search of her bag found a note of authorization to receive the parcel. The case was heard by the Limassol Assize Court, which imposed a 10-year prison sentence on the 58-year-old and the 62-year-old on a three-year prison sentence.

In boxes of A4 adhesives the amount of cocaine

The second case concerns the seizure of cocaine weighing 6.5 kg, which was found on May 27, 2022, in a container, which arrived at Limassol Port, a few days earlier. For the case, a 58-year-old man was sentenced by the Limassol Assize Court to 13 years in prison. According to the facts, the YKAN received information that on three pallets containing paper packages with adhesives that were in a container, there were quantities of drugs. From the examinations carried out, it was found that this container arrived from the port of Piraeus to the port of Limassol on the same day (24/5) and was addressed to the company of the 71-year-old.

After search warrants were obtained, the container was searched the next day and taken to a warehouse for unloading. The search found three pallets containing boxes of A4 adhesives containing 6.5kg of cocaine. Then a controlled delivery took place and the drugs were replaced with dummies, while the warehouse was placed under guard. The pallets with the drug models were delivered to the 58-year-old at a warehouse in Limassol which had been rented by the owner and recipient of the shipment. For the case, the 58-year-old was sentenced by the Limassol Assize Court to 13 years in prison.
