CCA - DRASTIC MEASURES FOR JUVENILE DELINQUENCY ARE REQUIRED

 Filenews 16 December 2024

Immediate and drastic measures are required, the Cyprus Police Association said in an announcement regarding the incidents of juvenile delinquency in cities of free Cyprus on December 13.

The CAA notes that "the reasons for what we are witnessing seem to be deeper rooted in the grassroots of society, with the relevant bodies apathetically following the events, expecting as usual the members of the Police to deal with them." He adds that "in particular, the Ministry of Education, foreseeing the continuous increase in juvenile delinquency, should have drawn up programs of social conscience and behaviour in school units long ago."

The Association also mentions that "collectively organized young hooligans vandalize, arson, destroy, injure citizens or police officers, using firecrackers, flares, pistols, naval flares, torches and Molotov cocktails, during periods of religious holidays (Easter), sports-football matches, social events, national memorials, the start and end of the school period, while at the same time the increase and ghettoization of areas of the Republic of Cyprus with It often leads to clashes and street fights, often for trivial reasons."

The CAA says it reinstates its long-standing demand for the creation of permanent anti-riot teams in each district, with police officers who will have received the required training and will carry the appropriate equipment to be able to perform their duties more effectively.

"The immediate adoption of drastic measures to deal more effectively with the dangerous increase in delinquency in society is now imperative," he stresses.
