PROMETHEUS SAILS SOON FROM SHANGHAI - HIS CERTIFICATION IS URGENT
Filenews 8 November 2024 - by Eleftheria Paizanou
The floating LGN regasification unit (FSRU) Prometheus is expected to set sail from Shanghai in the next few weeks, Energy Minister George Papanastasiou said.
During the presentation of the ministry's budget to the members of the parliamentary Finance Committee on Friday morning, he expressed the estimate that Prometheus will sail soon, following the agreement made between ETYFA and the Chinese CPP.
He also said that tenders for the completion of the works of the land unit and the pier at the Vasilikos terminal are underway. At the same time, he indicated that ETYFA is preparing the ship to sail.
Replying to questions from MPs, he noted that "the possession of the ship by ETYFA will have some significance, but it should be certified as an FSRU and not remain at anchorage." According to the energy minister, the ship is ready for certification and will be taken to a gas regasification terminal. Apparently in another European country, without excluding Egypt, as we are told. As he explained, today the value of the ship is zero, pointing out that "as soon as the ship is certified, its value will be determined." The cost of converting the ship into a reuse plant amounted to €190 million, but it is estimated that after certification it will be worth much more.
In response to MPs, the minister said discussions are underway on the return to the EU of €68.6 million spent on the terminal in Vasilikos, out of a total European grant of €101 million.
