CYTA INVESTIGATES NUMBER AND ID OF THE CALLER ON MOBILE SCREENS

Filenews 23 November 2024 - by Eleftheria Paizanou

Cyta will carry out studies "in due course" to assess the need and viability of a service that will allow the display on the screen of telephones, in addition to the number of the person calling, and their identity. Similar practices are applied by other countries, in the context of protecting their customers from unwanted interference (telephone calls) in their privacy.

Finance Minister Makis Keravnos mentioned the above in his reply to a question submitted by AKEL MP Andros Kyprianou, through the parliamentary procedure.

As stated in the reply, although the development of a caller identification service has not been prioritised by the market research systematically carried out by Cyta, however, in the context of the actions it promotes for the best possible protection of privacy, there is a possibility that a techno-economic study will be included in its future plans to assess the viability of the investment required, in order to achieve the technical readiness of the networks.

At the same time, he notes that "in order to bring about a meaningful result, the service should be offered by all providers in Cyprus, which requires the adoption and use of a common and reliable database. In any case, the effectiveness of the service is limited to subscription services, as the application to holders of prepaid services, which make up 30% of mobile connections in the market, is particularly difficult."

At the same time, it indicates that in order to ensure the protection of telephone customers, Cyta already offers the possibility of caller ID, which allows the number to be displayed. This, he notes, concerns all calls coming from its customers.

"Cyta demonstrates in practice its sensitivity to the protection of its customers from unwanted interference with their privacy. To this end, various services have been developed and provided, such as safeweb to enhance security when surfing the internet, the safe internet service specializing in protecting children from illegal and unwanted internet content and the antivirus & antispam protection service", the Organization adds in its briefing to the Minister of Finance.

The three services are provided free of charge to all customers of the Authority, with the aim of encouraging their widespread adoption.
