The Nicosia Traffic Police is investigating whether one of the seven occupants of the rental vehicle, which was involved in a fatal accident on Sunday in Nicosia, was in the luggage compartment.
Asked by Filenews if the Traffic Police knew where everyone was sitting in the vehicle, since there were two passengers in it in addition to its capacity, Nicosia Traffic Police Officer Stelios Panayides said that we know some data and statements are being taken to clarify where the occupants were sitting.
According to Panayides, it is a possibility that is being investigated, that one of the seven youths was on the bonnet, however, this has not yet been completely clarified, since the taking of statements from passengers continues.
Regarding rental vehicles online, Mr. Panayides said that there are safeguards to make them all legal, they have insurance, but added that just as a normal vehicle can be picked up and driven without insurance, it can happen with these vehicles.
In the case of the fatal accident, according to our information, the 20-year-old driver had a driving license, but had not completed three years from the day of obtaining it, so the amount of alcohol he was entitled to consume was 9mg instead of the 22mg that applies to normal drivers. Breathalyzer tests showed that he had 55mg, which is six times more than normal.
As police had announced yesterday, the vehicle involved in an accident in which 20-year-old medical student from Greece Irene Kontogiorgou died, was driven by a 20-year-old and also had a 20-year-old as a passenger. Passengers in the back seat were five other persons (three men and two women aged 28, 21, 20 and two 20-year-olds). But now, as mentioned above, it is being investigated whether one passenger was in the trunk.
As it turned out, the impact on the wall of the DIAS complex was not so violent, so the damage to the vehicle was limited and there was no justification for losing human life. However, it seems that the unfortunate 20-year-old was not wearing a seat belt, as a result of which she was violently hit as a result of the impact and lost her life.
According to the Police, the accident occurred at 3.10 a.m., when a rental car driven by a 20-year-old man on Archangelos Michael Avenue in Engomi, arriving at a roundabout, under conditions that are being investigated, deviated from its course, collided with the wall of an adjacent building, as well as with a traffic sign, where it was immobilized.

The 18-year-old who was arrested last night by members of the Crime Prevention Unit, after an eventful chase, confessed to stealing a rented vehicle from an area of Limassol. According to information provided by Filenews, it appears that the suspect had help from three other young people.
The 18-year-old was brought on Tuesday morning (19/11) before the Limassol Court for a detention order. The Court approved the Police's request, ordering his detention for a period of 3 days, with his lawyer A. Michalis not objecting.
According to the facts of the case, at around 22:50 last night, the Police received information about the theft of a rental car, which was parked with the keys in the ignition in an open area in an area of Limassol. At the time of the theft, the suspect was noticed by the person who had rented the car.
It should be noted that the vehicle had a GPS tracking system installed and, after detecting its signal, a police patrol immediately located the car. The driver, in his attempt to escape, was pursued and ended up in a dead end, where he lost control of the car and collided with a parked vehicle. He then exited the vehicle and fled, but was stopped nearby by a member of the Police.
After his arrest, the 18-year-old was transferred by the Limassol Traffic Police to the offices of the ICF Limassol to receive an investigative statement. At the same time, the person who had rented the car was also at the ICF offices, who identified the suspect as the person who stole his vehicle. The complainant in his complaint, according to the same information, stated that while returning to pick up the vehicle from where he had parked it, he noticed 4 people around the car. One of them got into the driver's seat, started while the other three people confined themselves to the complainant so that the first one could leave. The 3 people then fled.
Subsequent tests revealed that the 18-year-old was under the influence of alcohol and had used drugs. It should be noted that in his possession, after his arrest, a folding knife was also found.
