COLD IRONING COMING TO LIMASSOL - SHIP ELECTRIFICATION BY LAND

 Filenews 21 November 2024

The DECARBONLIM project, an important first step towards achieving Limassol's goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, officially started on November 18th, with the kick-off meeting of all project consortium partners, at DP World Limassol Terminal, Limassol Port.

The DECARBONLIM (Integrated Approach to Alternative Marine Power for the Port of Limassol) project is implemented by the Cyprus Ports Authority, in collaboration with Frederick UniversityDP World Limassol, Eurogate Ltd, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO) and the Limassol Municipality.

The aim of the project is to develop a feasibility study for the construction of infrastructure that will allow onshore electricity supply to ships moored in Limassol port. The completion of the study will lead to the construction of the proposed infrastructure, which in turn will contribute to the implementation of Cyprus' environmental policy.

When implementing shore-based power supply, a method known as Cold Ironing, ships can switch off their engines and connect to electricity provided by shore and the local electricity grid when moored in port. As a result, carbon dioxide emissions and noise pollution caused by ships' engines will be drastically reduced. The reduction of these negative factors will contribute to improving air quality and improving the health of both port workers and residents in the areas adjacent to the port of Limassol.
