12,000 VEHICLES WITH DANGEROUS AIRBAGS ON THE ROADS

Filenews 5 November 2024 - by Angelos Nicolaou

About 12,000 vehicles are circulating on Cypriot roads with faulty airbags installed in vehicles of dozens of automakers.

The above data result from information provided by the Department of Road Transport to the parliamentary Committee on Trade.

The issue is being discussed after the death of 19-year-old Styliani Giorgalli and the findings linking it to the issue of defective "Takata" brand airbags.

It is noted that the authorities are implementing corrective measures to replace problematic airbags because they pose huge risks to car occupants.

In Cyprus, 55,000 cases of such airbags are affected, for which 53,000 have been notified for a recall. So far, 33,000 airbags have been repaired. Another 22,000 were updated for recalls and not fixed. It was also mentioned that for 4 500 vehicles there is a limitation on technical motor testing.
