The USS New York, a United States Navy amphibious assault ship, has arrived at the port of Larnaca for its inaugural visit to Cyprus.
The ship’s arrival was confirmed by the U.S. Ambassador to Nicosia, Julie Fisher, who welcomed USS New York via a post on X.
Fisher noted that part of the ship’s hull is made from steel recovered from the World Trade Centre after 9/11.
According to the U.S. Department of Defence, the USS New York “has the primary mission of carrying Marines and equipment anywhere in the world”.
The USS New York is part of the WASP Amphibious Ready Group and the 24MEU, currently operating in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The U.S. has been strengthening its presence in the area in response to the war in the Middle East.
