POLICE ALERT REGARDING PARCEL SCAM

Police are urging caution to the public about a new scam involving postal package delivery aimed at stealing citizens' money and personal data.

According to reports received by the Cybercrime Sub-Directorate of the Cyprus Police Headquarters, in fraudulent messages sent via e-mail, it is stated that, for the delivery of a postal package that has been sent to them, citizens must pay delivery fees, so that the delivery of the package by Cyprus Post can then be completed. The messages contain an electronic link, which citizens are invited to select / follow in order to arrange the payment of fees.

These messages have not been sent by Cyprus Post. Citizens who receive such messages are urged to be particularly careful and not to select / follow these links, since there is a risk of theft of money from their bank accounts and theft of their personal information.

In cases where citizens are indeed expecting postal parcels to be delivered, it is recommended to check for the progress of their parcels, either by contacting their seller or sender, or by contacting the courier company through which the shipment is processed.

The public can generally see that such messages have not been sent by Cyprus Post, by checking the following three points:

1. The messages do not refer to the official website of the Department

2. Cyprus Post will not return an item, nor will it refuse delivery of an item, in case any duties/taxes have not been paid

3. The messages do not direct any payment to JCC Smart's online payment platform, but to another email address
