MIGRANTS TO MOVE FROM BUFFER ZONE

 Filenews 31 October 2024

Within the next two or three weeks, foreigners who have been staying for months on the ceasefire line will be moved, Deputy Minister of Migration Nikolas Ioannides said today in statements after the meeting of the House Standing Committee on Internal Affairs, in which he participated today, in order to inform its members about the actions and responsibilities of the Deputy Ministry.

"We have good indications that some states will accept some of these people and therefore within the next two or three weeks this issue will be resolved," Ioannides said, answering journalists' questions about the case, without saying which countries these people would go to. "We don't want temporary camps in the buffer zone," the deputy minister said, adding that it was a problematic situation that must be eliminated.

At the same time, he said that "the Republic of Cyprus will not bear the omissions of Turkey, which at least tolerates the transfer of these people", pointing out that according to the confessions of the people currently in these camps, they travelled to the occupied areas by flights or ships from Turkey. "We see a pattern that demonstrates the responsibilities of our neighbouring country," he said, adding that Cyprus cannot bear the consequences of the omissions of a country that does not fulfil its international obligations.

Also, during the meeting of the Interior Committee, the Deputy Minister mentioned that a decision has been taken to remove barbed wire that had been placed along the ceasefire line. He said work on evacuation would begin in the coming days and the material would be used for National Guard or other state needs.
