The Nicosia Assize Court, 40, sentenced 40-year-old Yasser Arar to life imprisonment, as expected, for his participation in the murderous plot against 34-year-old Dimitris Andronikos.

The victim lost his life on May 28, 2024 after three shots were fired on April 23, 2024 on the Palaichori-Anthoupoli road.

Arar was the driver of the motorcycle during the execution of the assassination plan against "Andronikos". On the motorcycle was 26-year-old Mohammad Kasab, who admitted to being the person who pulled the trigger by shooting Andronikou.

Today's procedure for announcing the verdict was formal, as it was known that the 40-year-old had admitted the charges he faced, including premeditated murder, which under the penal code carries the aforementioned penalty ("Any person found guilty of premeditated murder shall be liable to a life sentence").

At the previous hearing and after reading the facts for sentencing, he said: "I feel bad about my mistake. Apologise. I have a wife and three children. I spoke to the welfare office and stated my position. From the first moment I tried to help and cooperated with the Police. Whatever the Court decides, I am willing to listen."

Arar's role is now that of a prosecution witness, as the prosecution has made clear in previous proceedings. The 40-year-old father of three has been enrolled in a witness protection program.

According to Arar's testimony, the latter agreed to participate in a plan to intimidate a person, after transporting a second person on stolen motorcycles for the purpose of locating the 34-year-old victim. However, Arar said he realized that the passenger on the motorcycle was carrying a gun and that he later realized he was involved in an assassination plot.

His motivation was financial, as according to his testimony, a personal debt led him to the decision to participate in the project for a monetary fee.

When he was arrested, always according to the facts read before the Court in the previous trial by the representative of the prosecution, Christia Kythreotou, Arar, who is married and father of three children, from the first statement received to him admitted his guilt.

It should be noted that Yasser Arar comes from Syria, had come to Cyprus in September 2017 and the following year, at his request, was granted subsidiary protection status.

Now, the interest of the trial has to do with the first two defendants, 46-year-old Joseph Joseph ("Sifis") and 39-year-old Hamoud Khalil ("Spyros"), for whom a hearing will be held (17/12).

Already defendants "3", "4" and "5", namely, 30-year-old Omar Suleiman, 28-year-old Mohammad al-Agha "Hamada" and 26-year-old Mohammad Qassab, have pleaded guilty. With their testimony, they completely absolved "Sifis" and "Spyros" of any responsibility for incitement or other involvement with the crime.

Today's proceedings were also attended by the other five defendants.

The SBA Police last night arrested a 15-year-old boy allegedly related to the edited nude photos of students and teachers at a high school in Larnaka district that had circulated earlier in the day on social media.

According to information provided by "F", the police continue to take statements in order to clarify whether other students are involved in the case.

The young student gave a written statement on Thursday night and was released on bail and will appear before a British Bases court this morning to be charged.

Two investigations into this unprecedented incident have been ongoing since yesterday, one by the SBA Police and one by the Ministry of Education. The photos in question were put under the microscope, for which there were indications from the first moment that they were processed by students of the school and then circulated to groups maintained by minors on social media,

The incident, brought to light by Filenews, caused quite a stir at the school yesterday, after some students found that their faces had been placed in photos with obscene content. They immediately informed the management of the school in question, who realized that teachers were also victims of the bad taste prank. Then the parents of the students depicted in the photos were informed, some of them rushed to pick them up from the school. The Bases Police was informed about the incident, members of which rushed to the school.

Through a text message from the management, the parents of all the children attending this high school were informed that the photos are for a photomontage product. The message said that "indecent photographs of some of the school's children and teachers were circulated, which are the product of editing and reckless action by some students." Through the message, the school management called on parents to reassure their children if they are victims of this photomontage and informed them that the case has been taken over by the Police.

The ICF of the British Bases, according to information provided by "F", is investigating whether the photos of the persons placed on naked bodies were taken from social media accounts or with mobile phones during breaks. The school's Parents' Association was quick to clarify, however, that the school administration is not responsible, given that the photos in question were circulated late Wednesday night in groups maintained by students on Instagram. "Some students, who were victims, saw in the morning (yesterday) their disputed edited photos and contacted the school management who informed the police," Filenews reported.

Information from police sources said that preliminary testimonies speak of at least three perpetrators, whose mobile phones and computers will be under the microscope of investigators in the case. If the perpetrators are over 14 years of age, and therefore criminally liable, all appropriate procedures provided for by law will be initiated against them, as we have been told. Statements will be taken in the case from students and teachers who were victims.

Meanwhile, the investigation of the Ministry of Education is ongoing, requesting a factual report on the incident from the school management.

Update:  The 15-year-old was released on parole after allegedly confessing to having participated in the processing and distribution of edited nude photos of students at a high school in the Larnaka district.

The minor faces an offense for trafficking child pornographic material. According to information from the British Bases, the minor was released on parole and will appear again next Friday before the Court.

The conditions imposed on him are as follows:

• Prohibition of the use of electronic devices such as telephone, laptop, tablet and computers

• Prohibition of internet use

• Prohibition of contact with "victims" and others who may influence the case

• Comply with school regulations

It is recalled that the incident caused a great uproar at the school yesterday, after some students found that their face had been placed in photos with obscene content.

They immediately informed the management of the school in question, who realized that teachers were also victims of the bad taste prank.

Then the parents of the students depicted in the photos were informed, some of them rushed to pick them up from the school. According to the school's Parents' Association, the photos were circulated late Wednesday night and not during classes.

According to information reported by Filenews in a previous report, police sources have found a few dozen edited photos of female students attending the said high school, while a complaint is being investigated that edited photos of at least two teachers of the school were distributed.

The case, according to the same sources, seems to involve other students who will be called for statements and it is not excluded that new arrests will arise within the day. Under the microscope of the investigators of the ICF of BB are mobile phones as well as various groups of students on social media in which the photos were distributed.

It is still being investigated whether photos of the faces placed on naked bodies were taken from social media accounts or mobile phones during breaks.
