The Limassol Permanent Assize Court today imposed a six-year prison sentence on a 52-year-old man accused of drug possession. The latter was arrested by the Limassol YKAN on February 20, 2024, in possession of more than 4 kg of cannabis and 90 grams of cocaine. The defendant acted as a carrier and storekeeper in order to deliver them to their "owner" for a fee of €1,000. He was found guilty after pleading guilty to charges of possession and possession with intent to supply a Class A controlled drug, possession with intent to supply a Class B controlled drug and smoking a cannabis plant, in violation of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

In its judgment, the Court notes, inter alia, that "the seriousness of the defendant's criminally punishable conduct lies in the fact that he was in possession of three different types of narcotic substances, two of which fall within Class A, while the third fall within Class B. Undoubtedly, more serious was his possession, and indeed with a view to supply, of a very large quantity of Class B drugs, namely 4 kilograms and 239.22 grams of cannabis." The defendant, based on what was put before the Court, undertook to pick up the drugs found in his car and store them, along with the rest found in his home and then deliver them to the person who was the "owner", for a fee of €1,000.

The judgment notes, inter alia, that the defendant was not the mastermind of the whole business, but in this case performed the duties of occasional transporter and storekeeper of drugs, with the purpose not of securing profit from the sale but of delivering them to the "owner".

For his part, the defense lawyer of the 52-year-old, Dimitris Lochias, in his speech for mitigation of the sentence, referred to his client's clean criminal record, his immediate admission and apology to the Court, as well as his cooperation with the Police. He also made references to the circumstances under which the accused committed the offences, as well as the role he had. He also pointed out his family and personal circumstances.

The Assize Court took into account the defendant's immediate admission and his apology as expressed through his counsel, which demonstrate his remorse. It also took into account his immediate admission to the Police and the cooperation he showed during the time immediately after the interception of his vehicle, as well as during the subsequent search of the vehicle and his home, shortly afterwards, during his arrest.

The 52-year-old was arrested on February 20, 2024, after he had been placed under discreet surveillance by members of the Limassol YKAN. At some point, his vehicle was intercepted in an area of Limassol and the subsequent search of the vehicle found 2 kilos and 177 grams of cannabis. Subsequently, his home was searched, where an additional quantity of cannabis weighing 2 kg and 594 grams was found, as well as a quantity of cocaine weighing 90 grams. In addition to drugs, he was found in possession of a sum of approximately €13,000.
