The phenomena of student delinquency in Pafos are assuming increasingly worrying dimensions. A few days after two consecutive incidents between female students in high schools in the city, students allegedly caused a serious incident inside a school bus.

According to complaints by bus drivers, lately students have been increasingly engaging in indecency on buses such as fighting, smoking or drinking alcohol.

A driver who was running a route at noon, when the students left their school, complained to the police that serious damage was caused to the interior of the bus by some students, when they reacted to his exhortations to stop smoking.

Citing the testimonies of the other students, who did not take part in the incident and many of whom had even complained to the driver about the fact that some were smoking inside the vehicle, the driver said that those involved in the incident broke the glass of the entrance door of the bus with kicks, while also damaging seats.

The police of the British Bases arrested two men for illegal gambling.

Specifically, the two men were arrested for illegal gambling in Dasaki Achna on September 26 and in the coming days they are expected to be informed about the outcome of their case after the investigation of the Bases Police is completed.

The police arrested the owner of the betting establishment where an illegal online gambling business was conducted and a customer. At the same time, they made multiple seizures of equipment used to carry out the offence.

During a search of the site, 12 computer towers, illegal betting slips, a power switch, a digital recording device and €650 in cash were seized as evidence.

Police officers at the scene confirmed that seven of the computers were used to conduct illegal online "gambling" and further forensic investigations are now being carried out by experts from the RoC Police.

The head of the ICF, Lieutenant Phanos Christodoulou, explained that although illegal online gambling has decreased since the opening of casinos on the island, a small problem remains.

He said: "In illegal online gambling, we tend to see smaller amounts of money being played, as in this case. But it is important to add that this does not make it any less illegal. In the past this (illegal gambling) was a much bigger problem and while we have come a long way to reduce this crime greatly, we still see cases like this and we need to be ready to act when it happens."

Lieutenant Christodoulou also explained what the forensic experts of the Republic of Cyprus Police are looking for: "The Police of the Republic of Cyprus has a team of experts working on this and will examine the computer systems for illegal applications present in them that allow online gambling to take place.

"We have a zero-tolerance policy on this matter and when the investigation is complete, they will be prosecuted under existing law."

After their arrest, the two men, one from Avgorou and the other from Dasaki Achna, were released on bail of €1,000 each.

Disciplinary proceedings were recently taken against five police officers in connection with the escape of a Syrian prisoner in the courtyard of the Central Prison.

The Syrian fled last April while returning from court and after getting out of the police vehicle, waiting for prison guards to take him to his cell.

He seems to have taken advantage of the gap that existed until his transfer inside the closed prison and after escaping the attention of his police escorts, he escaped from the gate mixing with the prisoners' visitors.

His escape lasted about two hours after he was spotted nearby and returned to prison. The police officers belonging to the prisoner transport unit were burned by the prison's closed surveillance system, which showed them arriving outside the gate and lighting a cigarette, while removing the handcuffs from the detainees.

A disciplinary investigation had been ordered into the case, which revealed evidence of possible neglect of official duty. The five constables will now be indicted, and there appear to have been gaps in protocol for the handling of these persons from the time they arrive at the prison until they are picked up by prison staff.
