The new Dialysis Unit of Pafos Hospital was inaugurated this morning by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The ceremony took place at Paphos Hospital, on the sidelines of the MED9 Summit and since it was funded by the European Union.

President Christodoulides and von der Leyen expressed their satisfaction with the project, pointing out its importance for public health and the service of both Cypriot citizens and many European citizens who are on holiday or permanent residence in Paphos in need of such services.

The new Paphos Dialysis Unit was built according to European standards and has the ability to develop up to 27 dialysis stations depending on the needs. It also has a separate Dialysis Unit for HIV-positive patients, which until now the old unit did not have, and patients from Paphos went three times a week to Nicosia to undergo dialysis.

The Director of the Nephrology Clinic of Paphos Hospital Dr. Lakis Youkkas stressed that care was taken for the construction of a separate Unit for patients with infectious diseases such as COVID-19. The building, as he said, houses on the ground floor the outpatient nephrology clinics, there is a Short-Term Care Unit with four beds, a ward for minor operations and there is also a room for peritoneal dialysis, which is another type of renal function restoration treatment.

The needs of the Pafos district with this Unit are secured for at least 15 years based on the planning made, concluded Dr. Yukkas.

The construction and equipment of the state-of-the-art unit, with a total cost of €5 million, was funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan fund, as well as national resources.

The unit is housed in a brand new building of 1,300 square meters. It is equipped with modern technological means and is staffed by specialized medical and paramedical staff of the state health services organization.

It became operational in October '23 and provides patients with chronic kidney failure, comprehensive high-quality medical care, he said. The unit is the only one in Paphos and serves all kidney patients in the Paphos district, as well as kidney patients from other districts and abroad.
