 Pafos Live 30 October 2024

The environmental impact assessment study of the expansion works of Pafos International Airport was presented yesterday. According to the study, no "additional impacts" are expected from the expansion of buildings and tramways, while there is not expected to be any question of affecting residents in relation to air quality.

Hermes Airports Ltd has submitted an application to obtain planning consent for the implementation of the extension of Pafos International Airport within the demarcated areas for development purposes. In the context of securing planning consent, the managing company of the airports assigned to a specific firm the preparation of an Environmental Impact Assessment Study.

The Paphos International Airport expansion project, as mentioned by the company's Owner and Director Yiannis Glekas, will contribute to the prospects for the development of exchanges between Cyprus and the rest of the world. The impact was assessed and there is a continuous environmental monitoring program by the airport's managing company, Hermes Airport, and the impact assessment showed that "we are not going to expect any additional impacts" that will change what is currently in place.

He also said that they have made noise measurements in the existing area from January to March, but also measurements of air quality during the same period that are much below the limits of the legislation and "there is no question of affecting residents". According to the study, all elements of the project are located within the perimeter of the airport, on land owned by the airport and managed by Hermes Airports. The proposed expansion works of Phase 2 of Pafos International Airport are expected to last, as mentioned, approximately 18 months from site preparation and excavations to testing and operation of the new airport facilities.

In addition, it was noted that the works will include the construction of an additional section of the southern parallel taxiway, with all the necessary lighting and safety requirements, the expansion of the existing terminal to provide capacity suitable for the annual movement of five million passengers. It was also mentioned that the assessment reports show that all bird species using the area do not depend on the habitat within Pafos International Airport and that there are several other suitable habitat locations in the immediate area of the airport.
