THE DAMS OF ARGAKA AND MAVROKOLYMPOS HAVE DRIED UP

 Pafos Live 18 September 2024

The occupancy rates of the small dams of Argaka and Mavrokolympos in the Pafos district are very low. They do not exceed 13% of their capacity.

The two dams, which are among the smallest dams in Cyprus with a capacity of about one million cubic meters of water, Argaka and two of Mavrokolymbos, are currently at a historic low in terms of water stored since they do not exceed 138,000 cubic meters of water in Argaka and 273,000 cubic meters in Mavrokolymbos.

The Argaka dam is part of the Chrysochous network project and the Mavrokolympos dam in the Pafos water project and are connected respectively to the largest dams in their area, Evretos and Asprokremmos, which are also at very low occupancy, close to 30%. These two dams irrigate fertile areas in the Gulf of Chrysochous and the western low area of Pafos between Pegeia and Kissonerga and professional farmers are concerned that if there is no immediate rain, not only seasonal but also permanent plantations will be at risk.
