The government has given the green light to construct a new prison wing at a cost of €29.5 million, aimed at alleviating severe overcrowding in the country’s Central Prisons.
The expansion project, set to begin construction shortly, will create space for 360 additional inmates and require 218 new prison officers. Completion is expected by 2028.
A feasibility study determined that expanding the existing prison complex was the most effective solution to address the overcrowding issue. The project is anticipated to improve infrastructure, enhance public safety, and provide better working conditions for staff.
The €29.5 million allocated by the government will be disbursed in stages over the construction and maintenance periods.
According to the Ministry of Justice and the Prisons Department, the new wing of the closed prison, combined with the conversion of an existing open prison to a closed one, is expected to significantly reduce overcrowding in the facility.
