The ICF of Nicosia arrested today two persons, aged 56 and 31, respectively, in connection with a case concerning the arson of two betting shops.
What is remarkable in this case has to do with the fact that a case has already been registered against a 42-year-old man of Georgian origin for these arsons, which took place on 8 and 9 April. This shows that despite the criminal prosecution of one person, the case for the Police was not closed.
In addition, as Filenews learns, the arsons of betting shops in the Nicosia district are linked by the Police to the actions taken to assume the leadership of a clan in Nicosia after the autumn of 2023 and in particular the premeditated murder of Dimitris Andronikos.
Besides, as it became known from the procedures of detention of suspects (now accused) for this murder, ICF investigators obtained testimony stating that Andronikou "was trying to establish himself in the control of premises, mainly betting shops".
Indeed, the murder plan against him is attributed by police testimonies that will be judged in the Assize Court, to the fact that Andronikou with his activities hindered the plans of 46-year-old Joseph Joseph, who based on the indictment against him ordered the first to get out of the way.
The two arrested tomorrow will be taken to the Nicosia District Court, which will examine a request by the Police for their detention.

All six defendants will be under trial until the conclusion of their trial for the premeditated murder of 34-year-old Dimitris Andronikou ("Dimitroui") who lost his life (28/5/2024) after being shot on April 23 last year on the Palaichori-Anthoupoli road.
Three of the six defendants, through their lawyers Victor Akamas (1st), Agathoklis Korellis (2nd) and Alexandros Clerides (4th), respectively, had yesterday submitted an objection to the prosecution's request before the Assize Court for their detention until the conclusion of the trial.
Based on the arguments of the aforementioned defence lawyers, the witness material does not suggest that they will be convicted. The defence had also referred to the fact that a prosecution witness in the case refuted what he had testified to investigators at the ICF of Nicosia.
However, the three-member judiciary this morning in a reasoned decision rejected the objection, ruling that there is a possibility of conviction, regardless of the expectation of acquittal. Moreover, the Assize Court, referring to the withdrawal of the aforementioned witness, notes in its verdict that it "does not alter the image before us".
Now, attention turns to the next trial on September 24, when the six defendants will answer a total of eight charges they face. On that date, it will be clear whether the defense lawyers of the six defendants will raise pre-trial objections.
In summary, the defendants in the order listed in the indictment:
Joseph Joseph ("Sifis") – 46 years old
Hamoud Khalil ("Spyros") – 39 years
old Omar Suleiman – 30 years old
Mohammad Al Agha ("Hamada") – 28 years
old Mohammad Khasab – 26 years old
Yasser Arar – 40 years oldThe categories
The indictment includes a total of eight charges. The first six charges are common to all and concern premeditated murder, possession of a category B firearm without a license (unidentified pistol), possession of explosives (three rounds of firearm used in the crime) and theft (three charges of possession of two stolen motorcycles and in a stolen vehicle of three persons from Limassol).
The other two charges concern the 3rd accused, 30-year-old Omar Suleiman, and the 4th accused, 28-year-old Mohammad Al-Agha ("Hamada"), respectively. The 30-year-old is charged with possession of 7,000 euros, an amount reasonably suspected of being stolen, while the 28-year-old is charged with possession of 16 grams. Cannabis.
Changes
It is likely that following reports by the defence in yesterday's proceedings the indictment will be amended. A question had been raised in relation to the details of the offences, and it was argued that the role of each defendant was not discernible. This position is obviously based on the right of every person to know exactly what he or she is accused of. It is therefore not excluded that the prosecution may make changes. It should be noted that the indictment has already been amended as it was found yesterday. Two other people included in it, one undertrial and one serving a multi-year prison sentence, were removed from the indictment.
The 34-year-old had received three shots, one in the neck and two in the body, and succumbed to his injuries 36 days after he was seriously injured. According to the ICF of Nicosia, the crime took place against the backdrop of the leadership of a criminal group in Nicosia. According to testimony obtained by investigators, the 46-year-old "Sifis" took over the leadership of a clan in the capital.
He clashed with 34-year-old Dimitris Andronikou, who allegedly attempted to take control of premises, mainly betting shops. The 46-year-old (1st accused) and the 34-year-old allegedly exchanged death threats. Written testimony showed the 46-year-old sending the message to Andronikou that he would get him out of the way first.
All the accused, according to the testimonies obtained by the ICF, contributed to the crime by cooperating with each other. This team, always based on the case presented before the Court by the Police in the judicial proceedings that preceded it, operated hierarchically throughout Cyprus, having organization, coordination and distinct roles.
