The hunting season (specifically, phassa, ie migratory birds, hunting) begins on Sunday, August 25, the Department of Forests said in a statement.
At the same time, it appeals "very strongly to hunters to be particularly careful during their excursions to rural and forest areas, completely avoiding actions and activities that may cause fire, that is, to completely avoid lighting a fire for any reason, as well as avoiding throwing lit cigarette butts and matches, since the prevailing weather conditions are particularly favorable for the explosion and expansion of fires."
It also stresses that the discharge into the environment of empty cartridges constitutes serious pollution and that this is prohibited by the "Protection and Management of Wild Birds and Game Law". Therefore, hunters are asked to collect empty cartridges.
It is reminded that it is strictly forbidden to light fires in forest and rural areas and that this action is an offense which according to the Forest Law is punishable by imprisonment up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50.000,00 or both penalties. "The lighting of fires is allowed only in the specially designed barbecues of the picnic areas of the Department of Forests for food preparation," it added.
It is emphasized that the consequences of the fires are incalculable.
Anyone who notices smoke or fire in or near the forests is urged to call 1407 (Department of Forests) or 112 (Fire Brigade) immediately.
