Garbage weighing 1.2 tons was collected during the cleaning of the seabed at the Harbour in front of Kato Paphos Castle. The cleaning took place on Sunday and among the rubbish recovered from the seabed were tires, irons and even an armchair.
According to an announcement by the AKTI Research Centre, the clean-up was carried out by the Centre itself, the Cyprus Ports Authority and the Pafos Port and Maritime Police, in collaboration with the CYDIVE diving centre and the Paphos Free Divers team.
It reportedly took 12 divers an hour to collect 1.2 tons of garbage. Specifically, 200 metal cans, 50 glass bottles, 27 car tires, many pieces of iron, "ghost nets", were collected, lost, abandoned and discarded in the marine environment and continue to fish on their own, even an armchair.
The AKTI Research Center in its announcement expresses warm thanks to all attendees for their cooperation and support, noting that "the seas are not garbage dumps. We love our coasts, we keep our seas clean. The sea is our life."
The event was welcomed by the Pafos Municipal Councillors, Euclid Amvrosiades President of the Beaches Committee and Andreas Grigoriades, member of the Pafos Municipality Beaches Committee.
