Green Dot is finding a permanent solution for recyclable materials, which immediately purchased a plot of land of 20,000 sq.m. in the industrial zone of heavy nuisance of Tseri for the construction of a modern packaging waste management unit.
To date, all the necessary documents have been submitted and the planning permission is expected to be obtained and all the appropriate procedures for the construction of the unit is expected to be operational in 18 months.
Green Dot stresses that the temporary solution that was deemed the most appropriate under the circumstances to receive the recyclable materials of the program from house to house in the districts of Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta was the Koshi OEDA after the catastrophic fire on July 16, 2023 at the licensed Ecobalance waste management unit in the industrial area of Geri.
Primarily, "Green Dot turned to existing recyclers to serve PMD electricity, which, however, were unable to respond at this time," it said in a statement.
Therefore, he notes, approval was requested and received from the Department of Environment for the delivery of materials to the Koshi OEDA. For the paper stream, sorting was arranged through the licensed unit C. E. I. Cyprus Environmental Industries Ltd.
Citing reports by OEDA Koshi, Green Dot notes that of the quantities delivered to the plant (10,000 tons per year), 50-60% are recycled, a percentage close to 73% achieved during the operation of the Ecobalance unit (data Jan – Jun 2023).
Furthermore, it clarifies about the temporary solution proposed for the installation of temporary pre-sorting equipment at the Koshi OEDA by the Department of Environment, noting that this was not possible for reasons given in writing by the Koshi OEDA to Green Dot. In relation to the delivery of materials, the System was charged by the Board for the Exploitation of Household Waste Disposal Sites of Larnaka and Famagusta until June 2024. At the same time, Green Dot has lost the value of the materials, which is now benefiting the manager of OEDA Koshi, as a counterpart to the sorting and marketing services offered to Green Dot.
