GRAVE SOLD TWICE

 Pafos Live 3 August 2024

The Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights Maria Stylianou – Lottides, in a report prepared after investigating a complaint submitted by a woman regarding the concession of a tomb she had bought to another person from the Community Council of Tala, concludes with her suggestion that the decision of the Community Council to return the amount of  €1000 paid by the complainant, for the purchase of two consecutive graves at Tala Cemetery, be implemented immediately as the minimum compensation, for the suffering and mental anguish suffered by the above described incident.

In her report, the Commissioner notes that it is undeniable that the mistake of the Community Council caused great upset to the complainant, who, by taking specific actions (choice of burial site), arranged for her to be buried next to her husband, something that would have been made possible (but not due to the error) due to the practice of pre-selling graves adopted by the Community Council.

She adds that the Community Council admitted its mistake and decided, in order to avoid any similar mistake in the future, to stop the practice of pre-selling graves, submitted specific proposals to find a solution and approved the refund of the amount of  €1000, as the request submitted by the complainant.

According to the content of the Commissioner's report, the complainant considers that she has been deceived by the Community Council, since, apart from anything else, she paid for a grave, which the Community Council eventually sold elsewhere.

In conclusion, it states that the community council acknowledges the mistake made, but does not admit the allegation that there was an intention or attempt to deceive the complainant
