ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION SUFFICIENCY AT MARGINAL LEVELS PROBABLY TODAY

Filenews 16 August 2024 - by Chrysanthos Manoli

After yesterday's lull in high electricity consumption, due to the long holiday, it is expected that electricity demand will increase today, but without increasing the available electricity production from EAC units.

According to the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO), on Friday the available production from conventional units (oil) will be slightly less than yesterday. Yesterday the available production was 1066 megawatts, while today it is forecast to be 1023.

Theoretically, the conventional installed capacity of EAC is 1478 megawatts, which means that either due to some failures or other problems in generators of the Electricity Authority there is a loss of about 400 megawatts from the generation that could be available today.

In August, the maximum power consumption was limited to 898 megawatts, around 4 pm, which prevented problems in the satisfaction of consumers. Today, however, demand is expected to be higher, as several business premises will operate normally and will have increased requirements.

Therefore, it is expected that electricity sufficiency will still move to marginal levels, especially if there are failures or other problems in the production from EAC stations. There is, we are informed, an available -in time of need- production reserve of around 50-60 megawatts in Vasilikos, which can be exploited in time of need.
