CYPRUS IS 16th IN THE EU IN NUMBER OF DOCTORS AND 9th FOR DENTISTS, BY POPULATION RATIO

Cyprus ranks 16th in the European Union in number of doctors and 9th in number of dentists, by population ratio.

According to Eurostat reports, 69,279 doctors graduated in the EU in 2022, which translates into 15.5 doctors for every 100,000 inhabitants. The number is slightly down compared to 2021 when there was a ratio of 15.7 graduate doctors per 100,000 inhabitants.

The highest rates of doctors were recorded in Bulgaria (29.5 per 100,000 inhabitants), Malta (27.7) and Latvia (27.5). On the other hand, Slovenia had the lowest rate with 11.4 doctors per 100,000 inhabitants, almost a third of the rate recorded by Bulgaria, followed by Slovenia (12.2) and Germany (12.4).

At the same time, in 2022, 14,313 dentists graduated in the EU, representing 3.2 graduate dentists per 100,000 inhabitants. The number records a slight increase from 3.1 dentists in 2021.

At country level, Romania had the highest rate with 9.9 dentists per 100,000 inhabitants, ahead of Portugal (9.1) and Bulgaria (7.8). In contrast, Malta (below 0.1), Italy (1.4) and the Netherlands (1.5) reported the lowest rates of dental graduates per 100,000 inhabitants.
