The Assize Court sentenced a 41-year-old man to 11 years in prison yesterday after finding him guilty in a case of possession of drugs for the purpose of supply.

The 41-year-old was arrested last March, in the Famagusta district, when a quantity of cannabis weighing 7.5kg was found in his home.

It is recalled that in the context of investigation and evaluation of evidence, members of the YKAN (Famagusta unit) stopped for inspection a car driven by the 41-year-old resident of the Famagusta district.

During the investigation that followed, he was found in possession of a small amount of cannabis and arrested for a flagrant offence. A search of his home followed, where 12 packages containing a total of 7.5kg of cannabis were found.

Police arrested a 25-year-old man yesterday as part of an investigation into two cases of theft and malicious damage.

Specifically, the 25-year-old is allegedly involved in two cases committed in the Famagusta district, last April and May, where various cables were stolen from an EAC construction site and cash room, worth more than €500, while more than €270 worth of damage was incurred.

The 25-year-old was arrested last night under an outstanding court warrant against him and taken into custody to facilitate interrogations.

The ICF of Famagusta continues the examinations.

A 54-year-old man filed a complaint with the police, saying he was the victim of fraud.

The private employee, according to the police, told the ICF Limassol that last February he received a friend request on Facebook from a person posing as Anna Andre, with whom he chatted on a daily basis.

His digital girlfriend convinced the 54-year-old to invest a total of €30,000 in USDT cryptocurrencies on a specific platform.

The complainant states that with the guidance of the person in question, he sent the said amount in four transactions, from his bank account to an electronic wallet and then to the platform.

But when he saw on the platform that his investment paid off and tried to withdraw his profits, he could not. Then he realized that he was the victim of fraud and proceeded to file a complaint.

New incident of theft on a beach.

According to a police statement, yesterday, around 1:00 pm, information was received that on a beach in Larnaca, two young girls stole a bag that was on a sunbed.

Members of the Larnaca Police went to the area where they located the two suspects, aged 15 and 16, as well as the citizen who informed the Police, who was in possession of the bag and handed it over to the police.

Subsequently, the two minors were questioned and charged in writing, in the presence of guardians and lawyers, and are expected to be summoned before a court.

Police arrested a 32-year-old resident of Larnaca yesterday to facilitate investigations into a robbery case committed in Larnaca.

The case was reported to the police, by a 65-year-old woman, on August 5. According to the complainant around 2pm of the same day, while she was in an open area in Larnaca, she was approached on foot by an unknown man, who grabbed the bag she was holding. The 65-year-old resisted, causing the assailant to point a sharp object and slightly injure her in the arm. After the assailant managed to extract the bag, he fled by car, in an unknown direction.

Police examinations secured testimony against the 32-year-old, on the basis of which a warrant was issued for his arrest. The 32-year-old was located today and arrested under a court warrant. He was subsequently detained to facilitate interrogations.

The Oroklini Police Station is investigating the case.

Two serious cases handled by the ICF Nicosia were registered yesterday at the Nicosia District Court. A total of four men are charged in the two cases, who will be on trial until the first appearance at the Assize Court where the cases were referred for trial.

One case concerns the three bakery robberies committed on July 27, 30 and 31, respectively. The robber had stolen hundreds of euros from the cash register, using a knife at least once and breaching the entrance door on two occasions.

The ICF arrested a 28-year-old man accused of the corresponding offences of the penal code. The first appearance before the Assize Court was set for 30/9. Until then, he will be held as an undertrial. Information tells us that the ICF examinations found three pairs of shoes in the defendant's house that match those worn by the perpetrator in the three robberies.

The other case concerns the bombing of a 60-year-old prison guard's vehicle. In particular, three persons were charged, with the first appearance at the Assize Court set for October 23. As in the other case, the defendants will now stand trial.

The explosion had occurred in the early morning of July 4 in the car owned by the 60-year-old Central Prison officer, which was parked in an area of Nicosia.

Examinations carried out at the scene revealed that the explosion was due to an improvised explosive device. The ICF Nicosia had initially made at least five arrests in the case.

Police arrested a 23-year-old man yesterday as part of an investigation into a case involving conspiracy to commit a felony and misdemeanor, rioting, causing malicious damage and burglary of a building and theft.

Specifically, on May 16, 2024, information was received by the Police about a group of about 15 persons, who had their faces covered with hoods, who after breaching the entrance of a sports center in Limassol, entered its premises, where they caused damage.

Subsequently, those persons entered a second premises, close to the first, where they also caused malicious damage.

These persons also allegedly caused damage to four vehicles parked in the area.

During the investigation of the case, testimony emerged against the 23-year-old, who was arrested last night on a court warrant and taken into custody to facilitate interrogations.

The ICF Limassol continues the examinations.
